Expert feedback on your book outline
Get professional feedback on your outline before you start writing your book
One of the biggest hurdles writers face is knowing whether their book idea is strong enough to stand out from the slushpile. The Novel Development Consult is your opportunity to ask an expert: “is this idea good enough?”
Ideal for writers in the outlining stage or early stage of their first draft, this service will look at your planned book outline. You’ll receive 2,000 words of written feedback on the structure, story arc, character development, key plot points, pace, and market potential, so that you can be confident in your idea before you get too deep into the drafting process.
Turn your book outline into a strong foundation for your book
After purchasing a Novel Development Consult, you’ll receive an email with a submission form. You’ll be asked to share a few details, add questions for your reader, and upload a 4,000-word outline. Your outline should function as a detailed synopsis, covering the full scope of your novel. This includes characters, plot twists, point-of-view shifts, pacing, and structure.
Your 2,000 word review will address each of those points, as well as advice on technical hurdles you may come up against and feedback on its market potential. Our hope is at the end of your consult, you’ll feel confident in your idea and prepared to begin writing.
If you have already started writing your novel and you’re seeking advice on your progress, then an opening section review could be a better match.

Don’t take just our word for it…
We’ve been helping writers achieve their goals for over 20 years. Here’s what some of them had to say about our editorial services:
You kindly gave me some excellent feedback on the initial stages of my novel. Well, it’s “finished”, and I have been fortunate to have it shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith Foundation Award for Adventure novel of the year (unpublished).

Your comments on the random points of view in my opening paragraph left me stunned! I take all your advice gratefully, and all of the technical points like POV, tense, dialogue, etc., went straight on the to do list.

Thank you again for your encouragement and many brilliant suggestions for my Cuba novel. I found them very perceptive and incorporated them into another draft.

Thank you so much for thorough feedback, kind words and encouragement. It means a lot. I found your report very clear and it sparked many ideas
Aman K

I remain impressed by both the quality and the quantity of Liz’s work. Apart from the overall comments, she goes into such great detail, character by character, chapter by chapter, missing nothing.
Carmella A
Editorial client
I was also blown away with your encouragement and thoughtfulness. You have given me excellent advice on how to focus on not only the query and synopsis, but also the plot. I encourage other writers to use your service.

Thank you for your perceptive and incisive report. I’ve been desperate for help like this and so much wish that I had found Jericho Writers a few years ago.
Richard F
Editorial client
Very happy with the editing notes, it was just what I’d hoped for to move forward with my manuscript.

Kate [Rizzo]’s comments were very helpful. She made several suggestions for improvements which make sense. I can see how they would improve the narrative, especially in terms of characterisation and pacing. I am working my way through implementing them.

Frequently asked
questions
Who will be giving the feedback?
An experienced author and professional reader, who best suits your editorial content. We match our writers based on 20 years of experience working with industry professionals. We’ll consider their experience, genres of interest, and whether they themselves feel they are the right fit for your work.
Can I contact my reviewer directly?
No, but their in-depth report will contain actionable advice for you to progress with your manuscript.
How long does it take?
The turnaround is usually two to four weeks.
What genres do you accept?
While the Novel Development Consult is in the trial phase, we are able to offer it for all adult and children (MG and YA) fiction genres, and for narrative non-fiction/memoirs. We hope to expand this to include general non-fiction and children’s picture books soon. Unfortunately, we are not suited to academic texts.
Do I need to be based in the UK for this service?
Not at all, our editorial services are delivered online and are suitable for writers from all around the world.
Can I work with my reviewer in a long-term capacity?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee our reviewers have availability for long-term support. However, we do offer a range of services that can facilitate flexible long-term support for your writing, including mentoring or the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme. If you’d like to discuss your options, get in touch with a member of the team and we’ll talk through your potential next steps.
Can I get feedback on my manuscript too?
The Novel Development Consult will only focus on the outline of your novel. However, our range of editorial services can offer in-depth feedback on your work-in-progress from expert editors and literary agents. If you need help identifying which service is the one for your or if you’d like to discuss your choice of editor, book a call with our team – we’d be happy to help!
