Poetry Assessments

Get expert feedback on your poems

With the poetry assessment, you’ll work with an expert editor who will assess your poem/s, providing feedback and advice on style, poetics, structure, and more, alongside basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation. They will offer support in tackling the next steps and addressing problem areas. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss the report directly with your editor once you’ve received it. Each poem will be looked at individually and addressed separately. Where appropriate, poems will also be considered as part of a collection, for example considering how they work together and their overall presentation to make sure your poetry collection stands out.

Jericho Writers was founded by writers, for writers. Four of us are published by the Big 5, while others are deep in the writing process. We carefully select the editors we work with — we choose the kind of people we’d want to guide us in our own writing. It’s this approach that has helped authors move forward with confidence, launch their careers, sign with literary agents and become Sunday Times bestsellers.

Your poetry assessment will include

Actionable feedback & advice

An expert editor will assess up to 10,000 words of your poems/collection, providing feedback and advice on style, poetics, structure, and more in a 1,000-2,000 word report. Your book editor will give you clear steps to follow to resolve problem areas, with examples.

Advice on commercial potential

Your expert editor will assess the commercial viability of your work, whether you are entering competitions, submitting to magazines and journals, or publishing a collection of poems.

Support from your poetry editor

After you receive your poetry assessment, you’ll have the opportunity to clarify any questions via email with your editor. If you’d like to continue to work with your editor, you have the opportunity to book post editorial support, exclusive to editorial clients.

Work with one of our professional editors

We’ve worked hard over 20 years to hand-pick our team of expert editors. Once you buy a poetry assessment, our Writer Support Team will match you with the editor that best fits your work. Our editors specialise in trade fiction and non-fiction texts. They include traditionally published authors as well as publishing professionals such as literary agents and Big 5 publishers. Frequently asked
questions

1

How do I submit my poems/poetry collection?

To submit your manuscript for our professional editing service, follow these simple steps:

1) Select the appropriate word count in the box above (choose the one that matches your project’s total word count).

2) Click on “Add to basket”

3) Once you’ve made your payment, you’ll be sent an email with a link. Click on this and you’ll be able to upload your manuscript for review.

2

Do the poems need to be connected (e.g. from one collection)?

Your poems do not need to be connected, though it would be useful to include this information in your submissions form. For example, if your poems are connected and you would like the editor to give feedback on how they work together, please let us know. If your poems are not connected and you would like each one to be considered individually, that’s fine too – just make sure to include this information.

3

Can I send in a style guide?

Of course! If you use a certain format, layout, structure, or language that you would like to maintain, then you can include this information in your submissions form.

4

Do I need to be based in the UK for this service?

Not at all! Our editorial services are delivered online and are suitable for writers from all around the world.

5

How should I format my manuscript?

Please only upload Word documents via the online submission form. Don’t forget to number your pages and double space your lines, and use an easy-to-read font like Times New Roman 12.

It’s also helpful for our editors if you make sure paragraphs are indented and use page breaks where needed throughout your manuscript.

6

How do you choose the editor?

We match manuscripts based on over 20 years of experience working with our editors. We consider editor experience, their genres of interest, and whether they themselves feel they are the right fit for your work. All matches depend on editors’ availability.

7

Can I choose my editor?

If you have a particular editor in mind, we will of course do our best to match you with them. We cannot guarantee this, however, as all of our editors are freelance and there are times when they are unavailable due to demand and/or other commitments.

Once you have placed your order, you’re welcome to send a shortlist of 4-5 editors from our website. We’ll do our best to place you with one of your preferred choices.

8

How long will it take to match my manuscript with an editor?

We aim to match you with the right editor within 2-4 days. We’ll get back to you as soon as the choice has been confirmed.

9

How long does it take to receive my editorial report?

If you’ve ordered a standard editorial report, you can expect our team to deliver this around two weeks after they receive your manuscript.

Express reports can be delivered in as little as one week.

10

Will I be able to discuss my report with my editor?

Following your editorial report, there will be an opportunity to check in with your editor via email. At this stage, you are welcome to ask a few follow-up questions regarding your editorial report.

If you’d like to continue working with your editor on your short story, you could consider one-to-one mentoring. These are flexible, online sessions that can be tailored to your needs. Find out more about Mentoring here or get in touch with our Writer Support team.
