About this course

In this four week course, authors Harry Bingham, Sophie Flynn, Becca Day, and Laura Starkey will take you through how to start your writing year off the right way, from making sure your idea is strong enough to avoiding common pitfalls and mistakes. This course, worth £99, is one of the many video courses included in Jericho Writers Premium Membership, which starts at just £15/month.

It starts with one scene…

Then another. Then another. That’s how you write a book. This course will show you how to write scenes that pack a punch. Together, we’ll work on just one scene in your novel, whether it be one you haven’t started yet or one you’re currently revising. Once you’ve perfected that one scene, the practical techniques you learn will apply to every scene in your novel. Are you ready to get started? Me and my fellow course tutors will see you in Lesson One.

Every scene in your novel should have a purpose and drive the story forward. In this lesson, we’ll focus on defining clear scene goals and ensuring your characters’ motivations are compelling and believable. You’ll learn how to heighten stakes, build tension, and keep readers turning the page. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to make each moment in your story count.

Want your readers to feel like they’ve stepped right into your story’s world? This lesson is all about crafting atmosphere and immersion. We’ll explore how to use sensory details, tone, and mood to transport your audience into the heart of your scenes. Through practical examples and live demonstrations, you’ll see how even the smallest details can make a setting unforgettable. Get ready to create a world your readers won’t want to leave!

Dialogue and internal monologue are the heartbeat of a novel, bringing your characters to life and giving readers a glimpse into their inner worlds. In this lesson, we’ll dive into writing authentic, engaging conversations and crafting internal thoughts that reveal motivation and build tension. You’ll learn to balance dialogue with action, avoid common pitfalls, and add depth to your characters. Say goodbye to clunky, unrealistic dialogue and hello to dynamic scenes that sparkle with authenticity.

Tired of your writing feeling flat? In this lesson, we’ll tackle one of the most transformative skills for any writer: showing instead of telling. You’ll learn how to bring your scenes to life with vivid imagery, subtle actions, and sensory details that pull readers in. We’ll also identify when it might be better to throw the rulebook out of the window and tell in your scene instead of show. By the end, your readers won’t just see your story—they’ll feel it.

Frequently asked
questions

1

Who is Write With Jericho suitable for?

This course is suitable for writers at all stages of the writing journey, from those just getting started with their novel to those at the editing stage. It is aimed primarily at fiction and narrative non-fiction writers. Those writing for children will still benefit, though the more basic the text, the less the principles will apply.

2

How long will I have access to the Write With Jericho course content?

You will continue to have access to the course videos, PDF guide, and forums after the course has finished for as long as you remain a Premium Member.

3

Am I guaranteed feedback from the course tutors?

No. Course tutors will give feedback to as many Premium Members as possible, though there are no guarantees. You are encouraged to give feedback to as many fellow writers as possible. The more you give feedback to others, the more likely you are to get feedback in return.

4

Can I purchase just this course?

No. This and our other video courses are reserved for our Premium Members only. You can join us as a Premium Member from just £15/month. If you’d like to join as a member just to take this course, we recommend taking out our Flex membership (£30 per month, cancel at any time) which will allow you to cancel your membership after you have finished the course – though we hope you’ll love it enough to stay!

5

Do I have to complete the course in 4 weeks?

Not at all. If you’d prefer, you can spread the learning out and spend more time working on your assignments, as you will continue to have access to the course content for as long as you’re a Premium Member. However, it’s worth noting that the course tutors will only be giving feedback to members in the 7 days after the lesson gets released, so if you’d like the chance at getting feedback from the course tutors, we recommend trying to complete the task by the suggested date.

6

When will each lesson be released?

A new lesson will be released every Monday, starting 27 January 2025, with the homework assignment being released on the same day. You are free to post your work for peer-to-peer feedback whenever you’d like as the forums will stay open, however the Jericho Writers team will be choosing 3 pieces of work to give feedback on for each lesson, so if you’d like to be considered for that then we advise you post your homework in the 4 days after the lesson is released.

7

How do I get more feedback on my work in the forums?

As the old saying goes, give and you shall receive. If you comment on someone’s post with helpful feedback, they will be more likely to comment on your post. It’s worth mentioning that the threads in Townhouse with the most recent replies get moved to the top of the forum, so if you don’t have any feedback on your post you are welcome to reply to your thread with the word ‘Bump’ – but please don’t do this more than once per week to give everyone a fair chance.

8

I took Write With Jericho last year. Is this the same course?

Nope! These are brand new lessons. In addition, they are longer and more in-depth than last year’s lessons. If you still want to watch last year’s Write With Jericho content, don’t worry. All Premium Members can still access the old lessons via the Masterclasses tab.
