In this first lesson, founder of Jericho Writers, Harry Bingham dives into the areas you need to think about when planning your novel. You’ll create a pitch for your book, take a look at plot using the 5-point structure method, create notes on your settings and characters, and develop the plan for your story until things feel coherent and you as the author feel satisfied.

Your homework

  • Create your pitch, keeping it to less than 20 words
  • Write one short paragraph (or five bullet points) to summarise your plot
  • Write one short paragraph to summarise your character, settings etc

Post your homework into this forum. Make sure you give feedback on other writers’ work. Even if they are not writing in the same genre as you, this practice is incredibly helpful for your own writing. The more you give feedback on others, the more likely you’ll be to receive feedback on your own.
