Course Syllabus

Find out what you’ll learn in this week-by-week breakdown.

Discover what defines Romance, why readers love it, and how to position your novel in a crowded market. Explore tropes, sub-genres, heat levels, and genre-blending while defining your mission as a romance writer.

Outcome: This week you’ll learn how to meet reader and market expectations, finding your novel’s place in the diverse Romance universe. You’ll discover if you’re a super spicy or closed-door writer and define your mission statement as a Romance writer.

Romance can be a crowded market so your novel needs to stand out. One key ingredient is learning how to craft a killer premise and elevator pitch, then build a romantic arc with real stakes. You’ll explore structure, conflict, and pacing to create a love story that grips from start to finish.

Outcome: This week, you’ll understand the core elements of building a compelling love story and learn how to crate passion and pace through narrative structure. You will use conflict and character to pin down your plot.

In a world of increasingly picky readers, it is essential that you grab their attention immediately and hook them from page one. Over this week, you will learn how to write compelling openings and use setting as an active storytelling tool that deepens character arcs and emotional tension.

Outcome: You’ll write a compelling opening chapter that beguiles your reader. You will be developing effective skills (dialogue, description, intrigue) and understand when and how to use them to maximum effect

Characters are the beating heart of the romance genre. You want to create characters readers root for — and believe in. To help you achieve this, you will build emotional authenticity, avoid clichés, and develop romantic chemistry that feels genuine, layered, and earned.

Outcome: You’ll learn to develop emotional chemistry between characters that feels genuine and deep. You will recognise and avoid clichés in character traits, dialogue and relationships and you will understand how character decisions and emotions drive the story forward.

It’s not what you say, it’s the way you say it. The way characters speak and interact says more about them than any physical description ever can. Great romance writers master dialogue that crackles with emotion and conflict. You’ll also learn how to write intimacy and sex scenes that are purposeful, believable, and true to your characters — whether you’re closed-door or super spicy.

Outcome: This week, you will become comfortable with writing illustrative and authentic dialogue which readers will believe. You will develop ways to evoke character traits, and to seed and drive story. You’ll learn how to write dialect, class and realistic speech that draws a picture for the reader without them realising.

Readers will want a happy-ever-after but the jouney there can be perilous. You’ll learn to design effective story twists that feels surprising but earned. In romance, the best twists align with your character arcs, always keeping them and their relationship in focus. The ending should be emotionally satisfying for your reader and tie up all threads, which often makes endings as tricky as beginnings.

Outcome: By the end of this week, you will learn how you can use plot twists and character growth to supercharge your novel. You will be comfortable with crafting an ending that will linger in the mind of your reader.

The course was well structured, taking account of general writing advice but with an obvious emphasis on crime and thrillers. There was a huge amount of course content which I will happily revisit. And the live sessions with Graham were a bonus, he’s a good communicator.

Steven L

Writing Crime & Thriller Novels Course alum

Graham was very knowledgeable and conveyed that in a relaxed and non judgemental way. The content was good and really had me thinking about all aspects of my novel.

Gai F

Writing Crime & Thriller Novels Course alum

I appreciated Graham’s approach to writing a mystery novel. His understanding of all the elements that go into a mystery or suspense novel was particularly helpful.

Dennis S

Writing Crime & Thriller Novels Course alum

In the end, I had two offers of representation. The first with Storm Publishing who offered me a three-book deal. As I was considering this, I was approached by an agent who had read my submission to the UNWC anthology. After reading my full manuscript, she offered me representation. That was a wonderful and unexpected surprise. In the end, I plumped for Storm.

Nicky Downes

I thoroughly recommend the Simply Self-Publish course with Debbie Young. After completing the course, I had all the necessary skills to put together my own publishing imprint. ‘The Girl Who Fled the Picture’ came out in August 2023. I chose the full spectrum publication with a beautiful cover by Rachel Lawston. My publication dream is now a reality. I have plans for two more books in 2024.

I was determined to be more professional this time and signed up for the UNWC in the hope it would help me navigate publishing. In the end, I got two offers of publication but opted to go with Lightning Books. I was really lucky to be in a fabulous and supportive tutor group. There’s no way I would have kept going without their encouragement.

Alan Fraser

It was the best investment I’ve ever made. There’s nothing Debbie Young doesn’t know about self-pub.

Susan Davies

Susan Davies

Simply Self-Publish alum & author of ‘The West Rises’ (Shortlisted 2023 Selfies Award)

What I found most useful about the course was that Debbie was able to identify all the things I didn’t know I didn’t know. And that has allowed me to ask a lot of very important questions, to which her replies have been invaluable and have helped me to understand all the processes I need to get my head around.

Max Haven

Simply Self-Publish alum & author of ‘The Paths of Guilt’

A huge thank you to Debbie Young for hosting such an excellent “The course was absolutely brilliant and I’m still processing quite how much we learnt in such a short space of time, it’s been a tremendous privilege to have Debi’s feedback and incredibly insightful advice and analysis. It’s all been fantastically helpful.

Rejina S

Self-Edit Your Novel alum

I found it challenging, enlightening and most of all, practical. Debbie introduced me to stuff I knew about in theory but her course pushed me, and the others I am sure, to take action. She prodded us up to the starter’s gates. Now it’s open the gates and go for it.

Robert Stott

Simply Self-Publish alum

Debi and Emma are absolute goddesses of editing and I’ve learned more than I ever hoped for. My classmates were wonderful and have made the course a delight. I’m recommending this course to all my writing buddies.
