About Davina

Davina is an authenticity editor who has worked with major publishers, indie publishers and self-published authors to help create authentic, representative works of fiction and non-fiction. She is also an author (agented by Philippa Sitters Associates Ltd and on submission with her first non-fiction book). She was a Jericho Writers Friday Night Live (but on a Saturday!) Finalist in June 2025 at the Festival and has almost completed her first psychological thriller fiction book, from which she read the first 500 words out to a live audience of fellow writers and literary agents. Why Davina loves mentoring

Creating a book is a big deal, both during the writing process as well as when it is published and shared with the rest of the world. Knowing what may or may not be authentic or representative of the subjects that you are writing about can be tricky, especially when you might not have lived experience or knowledge of it. Having a ‘critical friend’ to call on to give you confidence and reassurance when writing about unfamiliar topics can be key to making the path easier when writing your book.

I can help fill writers’ knowledge-gaps and strengthen work, ensuring that the language used is contextual, carefully chosen and responsible, to minimise misrepresentation and harmful depictions.

I have read and edited dozens of books (fiction and non-fiction for adults and children), and having perspectives and advice to offer both as an authenticity editor and a writer is a strength of mine. I will help draw out and discuss your ideas, work with you to develop believable characters and settings, and give you the confidence to write in your own voice and style, whilst still ensuring that the content is respectful, responsible and representative. I love offering constructive feedback and expertise using my own lived perspectives, and identifying areas of misrepresentation, inaccuracies, or stereotypes within manuscripts . I will uncover unconscious bias and highlight any offensive phrases or over-used clichés that writers might unintentionally include.

I’ve built relationships with authors, editors and publishers through my work as an authenticity editor and I’m passionate about being actively involved in the process of creating high quality, credible and responsible books into the world! I’m interested in working with writers of all experiences who are working on non-fiction books (memoir, narrative or subject-led for adults or children), and fiction books of any genre (I’m particularly interested in contemporary, literary (including ‘book club’), crime/thriller/action, women’s, romance/erotica, and historical fiction for adults, as well as children’s, teens and YA books of all genres).

Why we love Davina

At Jericho Writers, we’re a team of authors, just like you. Four of us are published by the Big 5, while others are deep in the writing process, honing our craft alongside the writers we support. We work with expert book coaches and carefully chosen mentors, selected for their ability to guide writers through every stage of their journey. It’s this approach that has helped countless authors launch their careers, sign with top literary agents, and even become Sunday Times Bestsellers.

As a previous speaker at our Festival of Writing, our community have already benefitted from Davina’s wealth of knowledge about sensitivity and authenticity reading, and we’re delighted to now offer her support through one-to-one mentoring.

Why writers love working with Davina

Previous

Davina was brilliant. She read my novel and came back to me with detailed, written feedback regarding all areas of concern. She was clear about where I’d got things wrong, without being judgmental.

Simon van der Velde

Author of ‘The Silent Brother’

We had the joy of working with Davina as an authenticity reader on our manuscripts, and she delivered thoughtful, informative, insightful, and nuanced notes on all of the subjects we had requested […] we’d work with her again in a heartbeat.

Editorial Director and Associate Editor of Ballantine Books
