8-Month Online Course. Payment options available.

Hone your craft through live, interactive tutorials

Start where you are… and get to the end. If you have a folder of part-finished drafts hidden away, this is the course that will help you finally complete one. We’ll meet you wherever you are on your writing journey and keep you accountable. Whether you’re a true beginner or are already working on a manuscript, we’ll help you go from great idea to finished first draft.

Unlike most writing courses, ours isn’t built around pre-recorded videos. Through live, small-group tutorials where you’ll be encouraged to get involved and ask questions, you’ll develop the confidence and skills you need to create three-dimensional characters, a page-turning plot and flowing prose.

More individual guidance than you’ll get on any other course

Over the duration of the course, your expert tutor will review up to 24,000 words of your manuscript. Each month you’ll submit 3000 words, then join your tutor for a live, one-to-one Zoom mentoring session to discuss their feedback.

You’ll have all the support you need to make consistent progress on producing a novel that’s uniquely yours.

Learn from the best in the business

Our hand-picked tutors bring a wealth of experience and a proven track record of mentoring  successful writers. Many have been published in multiple languages, have had work optioned for the screen and have won or been nominated for awards – including the Booker Prize.

Your Novel Writing Course includes:

Weekly tutorials with classmates

Meet with your expert tutor, plus a maximum of 11 classmates, to focus on the craft of writing: creating characters, planning your plot and improving your prose.

Monthly one-to-one mentoring

Get personalised feedback from your tutor every month after they’ve reviewed 3000 words of your work-in-progress, so you can sharpen your skills as your project progresses.

Optional additional live events

With one year of Jericho Writers Premium Membership included, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a weekly group writing hour, plus a wide range of other live community events.

Indefinite access to course materials

Unlike most providers, we don’t put an expiry date on Novel Writing Course content. After completing the course, you’ll be able to come back to it whenever you need to, for as long as you like.

A lifetime of help and support

With online access to our alumni area, you’ll benefit from the feedback and encouragement of friends long after the Novel Writing Course ends. You’ll also enjoy ongoing guidance from the Jericho Writers team.

The option to upgrade

If you’re ready to take steps towards publication when the course finishes, you can upgrade to our Ultimate package. You’ll get bonus mentoring sessions, help with preparing your submission pack and one-to-one feedback from literary agents.

Early enrolment offer available

Write a novel in eight months

This month, we’ll focus on planning your novel. You’ll explore different approaches to crafting a compelling plot and work with your tutor to ensure you have the perfect story structure in place.

Outcome: You’ll finish Month One with a clear, ready-to-use roadmap for taking your book idea from beginning to end.

In Month Two, you’ll devote yourself to finding the perfect point of view for your story, experimenting with different perspectives and assessing how they enhance your narrative.

Outcome: You’ll know whether your novel idea shines brightest as a first-, third- or even second-person narrative, as well as which of your characters should be telling the tale.

This month, we’ll look at setting. How do you create a world that your readers feel truly immersed in? How realistic or fantastical should the setting for your story be? What techniques are best for world-building – and how can you avoid overloading readers with extraneous detail?

Outcome: By the end of the month, you’ll understand how to establish your characters’ environment in an engaging way that aligns with the plot and style of your story.

In Month Four, you’ll get to grips with the all-important job of creating three-dimensional characters. With support from guest tutor and award-winning author Yvonne Battle-Felton, you’ll craft protagonists who feel so real they could step right off the page.

Outcome: By the end of this month, you’ll know exactly who your main characters are, what motivates and drives them and what is holding them back. You’ll also understand how their interactions with one another will affect their development and drive your plot forward.

In Month Five, you’ll study the delicate art of presenting emotions and senses in your writing. How do you communicate a character’s feelings without drifting into cliché? How do you build empathy between your reader and your protagonist, and how can focusing on the five senses help to bring their experiences alive?

Outcome: At the end of Month Five, you’ll have a clear sense of how to connect your readers with your characters, so that the story you’re telling feels real and emotionally resonant.

This month, you’ll look at the vital question of how to engage your readers. From starting your book with a bang to building tension, maintaining pace and introducing plot twists, you’ll learn techniques that will keep them turning page after page.

Outcome: By the end of this month, you’ll understand the importance of momentum in your writing, as well as how to create it. You’ll also discover how to avoid the dreaded ‘saggy middle’!

In Month Seven, we’ll focus on your unique narrative voice. You’ll develop the confidence to write in a style that’s all your own, giving your work a distinctive flavour that readers can recognise.

Outcome: You’ll have an instinctive feel for your own way of writing, as well as how to ensure this works well for your reader.

In this final month of the course, you’ll work with your tutor on crafting a strong ending for your novel. You’ll consider how to complete character arcs, tie up plot points and make sure your readers are satisfied with your story’s conclusion – whether it’s happy, neat, tragic or ambiguous.

Outcome: You’ll have a clear plan for the final chapters of your book, as well as the skills you need for writing them.

Keen to keep learning? After the Novel Writing Course ends, you can choose to upgrade to our Ultimate package whenever you’re ready. This is designed to help you embark upon the next stage of your writing journey and includes access to extra editorial and mentoring services – plus guidance on preparing your submission pack and finding a literary agent.

Meet your expert tutors and mentors

Our eight month novel writing course is led by bestselling authors and publishing professionals. You’ll work with different tutors throughout the course but will have one dedicated mentor who will provide one-to-one guidance to help you finish your book. Each tutor is selected for their publishing expertise, mentoring skills, and commercial or literary success, including Booker Prize shortlistings and PhDs in creative writing.

Our Success Stories

We’re so proud to see our students’ novels get snapped up by publishers and land in the hands of readers across the globe. Join us on the Novel Writing Course and you could follow in the footsteps of S.J. King, who won a two-book deal with Storm Publishing, Alan Fraser, who is now published by Lightning Books, or M.J. Camilleri, who was longlisted for a page turner award in 2023.

We’ve helped hundreds of writers achieve their goals

But don’t take our word for it! You can check out what our students have to say about their experiences below.

Previous

My reasons for taking this course are 1) To finish my novel, 2) To improve my writing skills, 3) To learn more about the craft of writing. I feel the course is helping me accomplish those three goals.

Kathleen P

Jericho Writers course alum

The key advantage for me was the insight into the industry. Things like the agent one-to-ones and the partnership are not things you get with most other courses. It’s not a theoretical course (like an MA for instance); it’s a practical course with links into the industry.

Alan Fraser

Jericho Writers course alum

The Jericho Writers courses team has taken great care of us all throughout the past year. On a personal level, I feel I have benefitted greatly from so many aspects of the UNWC, and the numerous opportunities they have provided us with.

Frequently asked
questions

1

Who is this course for?

This course is for writers who have a great idea for a novel but aren’t sure how they’ll get from first page to finished manuscript. It’s ideal for anyone who’s ready to take proactive steps to get their book written, but needs guidance and support to plan and draft their story. Both confident beginners and more experienced writers are welcome – we’ll meet you wherever you are on your writing journey, building your confidence and skills as we help you stay accountable. Experienced writers who are keen to receive support with self-editing their work and preparing to seek publication might find the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme more suited to their needs.

2

What is the application process?

We invite writers from all backgrounds to apply to this course, whatever their educational backgrounds or prior achievements. We do, however, ask that all applicants are genuinely committed to a career as an author.

If you feel this best describes you, please apply now

We aim to respond to all applications in 3 weeks. All work will be forwarded to the course tutors who will make the final decision on entry, according to which writers they feel show commitment to the course and would benefit the most from the course components.

If you have any questions about the application process, you can email us on courses@jerichowriters.com, or book a call to speak with us.

3

Do you handle all genres? What about creative non-fiction? What about children’s and Young Adult?

We warmly welcome writers in almost every genre, from very literary to commercial. Our tutors work across a diverse list of categories, including both creative non-fiction and fiction writing. We certainly also welcome writers of YA and MG. If you write for much younger children, the course may be less suitable – but feel free to ask.

4

I have a full time job / family commitments. Can I do this course in my spare time?

Yes. We purposely designed this course to fit in around your other commitments; flexibility is one of the many benefits of online novel writing courses. Bear in mind that we will be asking you to write (or rewrite) your novel, as well as engage with teaching material and other online/offline events throughout the year. We recommend approximately 10 hours should be spent on the course each week to get the most from it. If you think you can manage that, we’ll be happy to accommodate you – and of course we’ll be as flexible as we can be.

5

Will the online elements of the course be easy to use?

We use an easy-to-navigate online teaching platform, which is incredibly user-friendly so you’ll have no difficulty understanding what to do. You’ll also have access to the teaching platform forums indefinitely, so your course friendships can long outlast the end of the course. If you do need help at any stage, we’ll be on hand.

6

Do you have bursaries available?

While we don’t have a full bursary available for this course, we want to help great writers get published, and if your personal circumstances make it impossible for you to fund the full price of this course, please get in touch. We can’t make any promises, but we’ll always do what we can.

7

Do I need to be available at set times every week?

For the most part, you’ll be able to work to a schedule that suits you. There will be regular Zoom calls but these will always be recorded so, if you can’t make the live session, you’ll be able to watch the replay.

8

Are there payment options available for the course?

Yes. We know that taking the Novel Writing Course will be an investment in your writing so we have the following payment options available for you to choose from:

  • Pay as a lump sum of £3495 GBP / $4595 USD.
  • Pay in 8 instalments of £480 / $630 USD per month.
  • Pay in 12 instalments of £325 / $420 USD per month.

If you have any questions or if you’d like to discuss payment options with a member of the team, please get in touch. We’d be happy to talk through the options with you.

9

Can I upgrade to the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme?

Yes! If you decide you’d like to upgrade to to the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme before the Novel Writing Course ends, you can do so. Your learning will continue immediately as you progress to studying self-editing, traditional publishing and self-publishing.

You’ll also have the opportunity to get one-to-one feedback from literary agents on your work, participate in our online agent showcase, have your work included in the end of course anthology and attend an in-person celebratory dinner at the end of the Programme.

While we’ll always try to keep students with their existing tutor when they upgrade to the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme, please note that we can’t guarantee this will always be possible.
