Before you send out a single email, you need to be clear on your book’s place in the market. In this lesson, you’ll define your genre, understand where your book fits on the shelves, and decide whether querying agents or submitting directly to publishers is the right path for you.

Not all agents are the right fit for your book, and a scattergun approach won’t get you the best results. This lesson will guide you through researching and selecting the right agents for your work, creating a longlist and shortlist, and developing a strategic querying plan.

Your query letter is your first (and sometimes only) chance to hook an agent’s interest. In this lesson, Becca will take you through her own successful query letter, so that you can apply the same principles to your own.

Summarizing your entire novel in just a page or two is no easy task, but a strong synopsis can make all the difference. This lesson will break down what agents look for in a synopsis, how to balance plot clarity with emotional impact, and how to keep it engaging without getting bogged down in unnecessary details.

Rejections are an inevitable part of the process—but they don’t have to be the end of the road. This final lesson will teach you how to handle rejections productively, interpret agent feedback, and decide when to revise, requery, or pivot to other publishing options. You’ll leave with a clear plan for your next steps, whether that’s refining your submission package or exploring new opportunities.

Non-fiction submissions follow a different process from fiction, requiring a strong book proposal rather than a completed manuscript. In this bonus lesson, you’ll learn how to craft a compelling proposal for your non-fiction project.

Frequently asked
questions

1

How do I get more feedback on my work in the forums?

As the old saying goes, give and you shall receive. If you comment on someone’s post with helpful feedback, they will be more likely to comment on your post. It’s worth mentioning that the threads in Townhouse with the most recent replies get moved to the top of the forum, so if you don’t have any feedback on your post you are welcome to reply to your thread with the word ‘Bump’ – but please don’t do this more than once per week to give everyone a fair chance.

2

How long will I have access to the course content?

If you join us as a Premium Member, you will continue to have access to the course videos, PDF guide, and forums for as long as you remain a Premium Member. If you purchase just this course, you will have access to the course content for 1 year from the date of your purchase. Once this year is up, your access will expire and you will need to either purchase the course again or join us as a Premium Member in order to regain access.

3

Who is the How To Get a Literary Agent course suitable for?

This course is suitable for writers who have a finished, edited manuscript, who are ready to begin querying. This course is a self-paced video course, meaning you won’t receive feedback from your tutor or additional one-on-one support. If you feel like you would benefit from a more in-depth course with additional support, Path to Publication may be a better option.

4

Will I receive feedback from the course tutor?

No. This is a self-paced video course, in which you are encouraged to share your work in the designated forum for peer-to-peer feedback. If you are looking to receive personalised feedback from an expert, you can either take Path To Publication, which is a more intensive course that includes close mentoring, or you can get a literary agent to review your submission package right here. Alternatively, if you join us as a Premium Member, you’ll not only receive this course, but also all the benefits of Premium Membership, which includes a query letter review from our team.

5

When will I get access to the content?

The first lesson of this course will be released on 3 March 2025. From that date, as long as you’re a Premium Member you will receive access to a new lesson each week, and continue to have access for as long as you’re a member. If you have chosen to purchase just this course rather than opting for Premium Membership, you’ll have access to the course for 1 year from the date of your purchase. After this period, your access will expire and you will need to either purchase again or join as a Premium Member in order to re-gain access.
