Helen Farrall (she/her) is an award-winning screenwriter with over 25 years’ experience. She has taught scriptwriting to MA level across the North West of England, and acted as a consultant and development writer for film, TV and theatre companies.
Helen’s career began with a BAFTA/Carl Foreman award for her screenplay THE HANGMAN’S DAUGHTER and she has since scripted some of TV’s most popular programmes including SHAKESPEARE & HATHAWAY, DOCTORS, CROSSROADS, DREAM TEAM and BAD GIRLS. Her work has been part of Emmy, BAFTA and RTS award-winning series and has been screened internationally. Helen’s children’s credits include BYKER GROVE, GRANGE HILL, JEOPARDY, CHILDREN’S WARD and GIGGLEBIZ, and animation series including THOMAS AND FRIENDS, BING, BOB THE BUILDER, GO JETTERS and POSTMAN PAT. She was also a storyliner for EMMERDALE.
Helen has been commissioned to write monologues, children’s plays, Theatre in Education and reminiscence pieces by local councils and theatre companies. She has written multi-media projects for companies including Channel 4 Learning and the BBC, most notably creating and head-writing the twice nominated, double award-winning alternate reality game SMOKESCREEN.
In 2021, Helen’s drama serial script RECONSTRUCTED was long-listed for the Red Planet Prize and she continues to work on original ideas.

What Helen says about editing
Working with scriptwriters is always fun and fulfilling, whether that’s a new writer still getting to grips with the technical side of screenplays, or a helping to hone a more confident script. Character and Story are always my starting points: if those are solid then writing visually and creating authentic dialogue is much easier. I’m also a big believer that Structure is your friend when it comes to building dramatic tension; working as a TV storyliner really taught me the importance of the three (or five!) act structure.
I particularly enjoy working on crime dramas, children’s, young adult, historical pieces, and dramatisations of real-life events. Whether your work is a one-off screenplay, a short film, or the first episode of a proposed series, I can help you take it to the next level.
