Crime fiction is a vast and thrilling world, ranging from classic whodunits to dark psychological thrillers. In this lesson, we’ll explore the major sub-genres—detective fiction, police procedurals, cosy mysteries, legal thrillers, and more—so you can pinpoint where your story fits. You’ll also learn the expectations and tropes of each sub-genre, helping you craft a novel that grips the right audience.

A strong crime novel starts with an irresistible hook. This lesson will guide you through developing a premise that immediately captures attention, whether it’s a seemingly impossible crime, a morally complex dilemma, or a protagonist with a unique stake in the case. Through exercises and examples, you’ll refine your idea into a pitch-worthy concept that sets your book apart.

From determined detectives to unreliable narrators, unforgettable characters drive the best crime fiction. This lesson will help you create protagonists and antagonists with depth, motivation, and secrets that keep readers turning the page.

Whether it’s a fog-drenched London alley or a sleepy village hiding dark secrets, setting plays a crucial role in crime fiction. This lesson will show you how to craft immersive, atmospheric settings that enhance tension, reinforce theme, and serve as more than just a backdrop—turning your location into a character in its own right.

Every great crime novel relies on clever plotting and strategic misdirection. In this lesson, you’ll master essential storytelling techniques like red herrings, unreliable narrators, foreshadowing, and plot twists. You’ll learn how to plant clues and mislead readers just enough to keep them guessing without feeling cheated.

Now it’s time to put everything into action. This final lesson focuses on building a writing routine, staying motivated, and overcoming common challenges in crime fiction writing. Whether you’re a planner or a pantser, you’ll learn strategies to keep your momentum going, finish your draft, and polish it into a gripping crime novel.

Frequently asked
questions

1

How do I get more feedback on my work in the forums?

As the old saying goes, give and you shall receive. If you comment on someone’s post with helpful feedback, they will be more likely to comment on your post. It’s worth mentioning that the threads in Townhouse with the most recent replies get moved to the top of the forum, so if you don’t have any feedback on your post you are welcome to reply to your thread with the word ‘Bump’ – but please don’t do this more than once per week to give everyone a fair chance.

2

Who is the Crime Writing For Beginners video course suitable for?

This course is suitable for writers who are just dipping their toe into the world of crime writing, or want a refresher on the basics. It is an entry-level course that aims to get you ready to begin drafting your first crime novel. Those with crime writing experience will still benefit, though you may prefer Graham’s more intensive Writing Crime and Thriller Novels tutored course, which includes close mentoring from Graham himself.

3

How long will I have access to the Crime Writing For Beginners course content?

If you join us as a Premium Member, you will continue to have access to the course videos, PDF guide, and forums for as long as you remain a Premium Member. If you purchase just this course, you will have access to the course content for 1 year from the date of your purchase. Once this year is up, your access will expire and you will need to either purchase the course again or join us as a Premium Member in order to regain access.

4

Will I receive feedback from the course tutor?

No. This is a self-paced video course, in which you are encouraged to share your work in the designated forum for peer-to-peer feedback. If you are looking to receive personalised feedback from Graham Bartlett, you can either take his tutored Writing Crime and Thriller Novels course, which includes close mentoring, or you can book one-on-one mentoring with him to support your learning here.

5

When will I get access to the content?

The course will be released on 25 February 2025. From that date, as long as you’re a Premium Member you will receive instant access to all 6 lessons. If you have chosen to purchase just this course rather than opting for Premium Membership, you’ll have access to the course for 1 year from the date of your purchase. After this period, your access will expire and you will need to either purchase again or join as a Premium Member in order to re-gain access.
