The special joy of a tutored course

We get a lot of feedback saying: “you guys offer quite a lot of different stuff, hey?”

And it’s true – we do. But we do for a reason: every single writer we work with is different. Some prefer to save pennies and self-lead their education, accessing advice and feedback whenever something crops up (if this is you, then the Membership is your one!). Some people like to write first – get feedback later (which is where our editorial services come in). Some people like bespoke feedback, or the chance to chat to an agent (if this is you, then check out the one-to-one support).

Often, writers want all of this stuff at some point in their careers, so we think it’s helpful to be there for all of it. Writing careers aren’t straight lines – they’re ups; downs; side-to-sides; and – if they’re anything like mine – generally all over the place.

The reason we offer tutored courses is that it takes much of this – the tutorials; the feedback; the community – and squishes it into a flexible, accessible package.

Our three new tutored courses are perfect especially for beginners who are just starting out. Creative Writing 101 with Naomi Ishiguro (yes – THAT Ishiguro) will help you get to grips with fundamentals such as voice, plot and character. Writing for Children with Eleanor Hawken is my personal dream course because it covers all the essential components of writing novels especially for young people. And Creative Non-Fiction with the brilliant Sam Jordison offers the unique opportunity to work alongside someone who’s an author and commissioning editor, as you learn the techniques to make your true story come alive.

All these courses take four-six weeks and are delivered online with class sizes of twelve people or less. The first dates are June/July, but you can also book in advance for August/September/October. The tutorials are all online, meaning they’re nice and flexible around your other commitments, and they’re all open to all writers internationally. And yes – if you’re a member, you even get a 10% discount. You don’t need to apply for these ones first, simply add to your cart and book if they appeal to you.

Considering a course, but not sure whether it’s right for you? Ask your questions directly to our Head of Courses Maria Pace in the Community here.
