How to end the year with a publishing deal

This time last year, I had a draft of a book I didn’t think would ever see the light of day. One year later, that same book is due to be published with Simon & Schuster in just sixteen(!) days’ time.

Granted, this is an accelerated publishing schedule, but it shows that it absolutely can happen. Set those goals sky high, roll up those sleeves and get ready to work. Here’s how you could be writing this segment in next year’s newsletter:

1) Write and edit your book to be the best it possibly can be. If you’re starting the new year with just an idea, set yourself clear word-count goals. If you’ve got a draft that needs some work, check out our advice on self-editing, or bring in an expert to quicken the process.

2) Start submitting to agents. Use AgentMatch to narrow down your shortlist and use our guidance to create a stellar submission pack. Remember, members get free query letter feedback with Expert Member Advice, so be sure to use that!

3) Stay motivated. Putting our work out there always involves rejection. Keep imposter syndrome at bay and keep learning from feedback and putting that advice into action. Whilst you wait, start writing that second book, future you will thank you!

4) Sign with an agent and land that deal. Signing with an agent isn’t the end of the work. In fact, it’s just the beginning! Learn about the process of what happens after you sign with an agent with the Getting Published Video course.

Of course, if you’re self-publishing, then you can control your own schedule from start to finish. We have a great new tutored course starting soon to help with this, or you can try working through the exercises in our Introduction to Self-Publishing video course.

Whatever your goals are for this year, you’ve got this!
