Introducing the Simply Self-Publish Tutored Course, by Debbie Young
Just over ten years ago, when I first discovered self-publishing in its modern guise, I could not believe my good fortune. Technological advances had put at my fingertips the ability to publish a book and to reach readers all over the world without leaving my little cottage in the Cotswolds. I could network with advisors and gurus at the top of their game. I could meet and share experiences with other indie authors. I could tap into the talents of professional editors and cover designers, many of whom also worked for trade publishers, to ensure my books met professional standards and would not look out of place on the shelves of a top bookstore. eBook and print-on-demand services made the whole process affordable, slick, and efficient. There was zero wastage and no need for me to carry expensive stock or manage distribution.
From a standing start, I’ve now self-published nine novels, two of which were shortlisted for an industry award for best independently published adult fiction, various shorter fiction books, and several how-to books for authors. Over 250,000 copies of my books are now out in the world.
To me, the twenty-first century self-publishing revolution means there has never been a better time to be an author.
Not that I’m dismissive nor disrespectful of the traditional route to publishing, for example, I’ve recently acquired a New York agent and am now represented by Ethan Ellenberg Associates for rights sales. But I cherish the freedom and control that the indie route provides, as well as the opportunity to launch my writing career without needing to depend on the traditional gateway of agents or publishers.
I love that in self-publishing, the author is always at the centre of the process.
As you may by now have guessed, my own experience has made me passionate and evangelical about self-publishing. I’m therefore delighted to have this opportunity to share with aspiring self-publishers all that I have learned along the way, including what I wish I’d known when I was starting out, and how the process has changed, and will continue to change as the sector matures.
If you are prepared to invest the time and effort to put what you will learn here into practice, this course will be your fast-track to professional self-publishing. It will give you the confidence and the competence to launch your new career as an indie author. I’m looking forward to sharing your journey.
