How to get help editing your book

Take action on your edits this week

We’ve had the pleasure of sending a couple of exciting emails this week. Congratulations to everyone longlisted for Friday Night Live 2021 (see the longlist below!) and the first few writers who have been accepted onto the Ultimate Novel Writing Course. You’re all absolutely smashing it!

In this newsletter, find out how you can apply for the Ultimate Novel Writing Course yourself and how to learn about self-editing by watching an author in action.

COURSE: The Ultimate Novel Writing Course 2021-22 is now open!

No other course gives you this level of feedback and guidance on your manuscript. If you’re serious about writing a publishable book this year, submit your application now for either the UK/Europe or the International course.

Editing help available to you right now

Fact: no brilliant books are written alone. They have teams of people behind them – often before an agent or publisher even sees them. Here’s how you can get that exact same help to make your book shine this summer (all this available to you right now!)

Self-Editing help

Books are made in the editing stages, so learning how to refine the first draft is essential. Our Self-Editing Your Novel course is now almost sold out for 2022(!), but members of Jericho Writers can take video masterclasses on this from the tutors, here.

Structural feedback (the big stuff)

This comes with a big shiny sticker on it because I personally think it’s the most helpful thing for any writer. Feedback on the ‘big stuff’ such as your idea, structure, plot, characters, and prose can turn an ‘okay’ book into an ‘amazing’ one. The shiniest of these are via a Manuscript Assessment (feedback in the form of a huge report on your whole manuscript) or Developmental Edit (that same report, plus some comments in-text). Not only can you use this advice to whip your WIP into shape, but you can also use it for every single book you write thereafter. We only work with world-leading editors we trust wholeheartedly – many of whom are ex-publishers or agents themselves.

Copy-editing and proofreading

This might sound a bit weird, but we tend not to recommend this as a service to most writers – even though it is something we offer. If you’re traditionally publishing, you don’t really need it (your future agent/publisher will only ask you to re-write the book again anyway!) HOWEVER – if you’re self-publishing, or if English is your second language and you need a bit of help – you can find out more about copy-editing and proofreading here.

I hope this helps you feel like there are options if you’re feeling a little stuck with your edits. Remember too, there is also the option of peer feedback in the Community – simply sign up for free and share your work here!
