Tips for Overcoming Writer’s Block
Have you stared at a blank page (or screen) for over an hour? Did you erase or throw away every idea that came to mind?
Blame writer’s block.
You’re not alone, as even the most famous and beloved authors experienced writer’s block (and wrote about it).
“I tell my students there is such a thing as ‘writer’s block,’ and they should respect it. It’s blocked because it ought to be blocked, because you haven’t got it right now.” ~Toni Morrison
Anxiety and burnout can affect your ability to concentrate, especially when you’re under a lot of pressure to finish a book or writing assignment by an approaching deadline. Here are three simple yet effective ways to help you refocus:
1. Take a Break
Close the laptop (or notebook) for an hour or so and go outside for some fresh air. Spending time in nature not only helps boost your mood but can also spark your creativity.
2. Create a Positive Workspace
Think about what helps you stay focused and motivated while writing or working in general. You can add some fresh plants to your desk decor, photos of your family, inspirational quotes, art, and more.
3. Get Some Rest
Night owls like myself reach creative peaks when it’s late and quiet. If not careful, you can fall into a habit of pulling all-nighters and, consequently, lack adequate sleep. The body needs rest (at least 7 hours per night) to restore overworked muscles, including the brain.
