  1. It is slightly annoying to receive invitations to join as a member when one already is.

You should amend the system so that this does not happen. Many organisations do. They have pages for members and pages for non-members/prospective members.

    1. Dear Ron,

Can I just clarify if you’ve received an email inviting you to join as a member or if you mean the message I have shared here? This community is open to everyone and all the blog posts can be seen by everyone so it’s not possible to exclude this page from existing Jericho Writers members. However only non-members should have received an email inviting them to join.

      Kindest wishes,

      Holly

      1. Thanks for your reply. At least I now understand why. Clearly it is a policy thing. I guess it still would be better to separate members from non-members or for members to be taken directly to the members’ pages when they log in rather than to have to transit through the ‘community’ on the way. Anyhow this is just one person’s view but I doubt that I am alone.

        Ron

        1. Hi Ron,

I understand now. The community is open to everybody and is actually built on a separate platform to the rest of the Jericho Writers website, which is why you currently need a separate log in for each one. Ultimately we would like to have the community fully integrated with the main website but we’re not quite there yet!

To access Jericho Writers membership pages, you would need to log in at http://www.jerichowriters.com and then you can access all the members-only content, including the guides, courses, webinars etc.

          I hope that helps,

          Holly

  2. Holly, I would appreciate some guidance on navigating this system. I receive numerous notifications. When I click on them I receive a ‘disconnected’ comment. Some appear interesting, others not – to me. I have no idea of which conversation they form a part. I have tried to adjust the notification list in my account but that does not seem to make to much difference to the number I receive and, in any case, it does not solve my problem of participating in the appropriate conversation. Help would be appreciated.

    1. Hi Ron,

I’ll certainly try to help, I’m sorry that it’s frustrating. It can take a little getting used to and we’re aware that there are parts of the community that are more user friendly and that’s partly why I’ve been brought in to this role – to try to help improve them.

To find a conversation you are interested in joining, I would recommend clicking on the ‘Forums’ link in the menu and looking down the list of recent posts. You can click in to any that seem interesting and then reply if you like.

You could also have a look at the ‘Groups’ section and see if any groups look interesting to join? Once you are in a group, you can see the latest posts that other group members share and can reply or start your own post.

The notifications can all be switched off if you like although it sounds as if you have already done this via your account on this page: https://community.jerichowriters.com/page/notifications-settings

Please note, in case it wasn’t clear, you can change the notifications on the site and by email.

If you would like to get a snapshot of all the different activity across the community, one of the best ways is to go to your account and then click on ‘dash’.

      I hope this helps.

      Best wishes,

      Holly

      1. Thanks Holly,

I’ll give it a go. I know I am in at least one group – non-fiction. But if I get a notification I still can’t tell from which group or forum it comes. I think I will try turning off all notifications and just enter the group more regularly to see what is developing.

        1. Hmm that doesn’t sound quite right, I’m sorry that is happening. I would like to overhaul our notifications eventually but unfortunately I need to focus on one thing at a time. If you still experience problems, do feel free to email any time on holly@jerichowriters.com..

          Best wishes,

          Holly

          1. Holly, even with this I have a problem. What exactly did I just say? Can’t this conversation be strung together? If you too are receiving comments and queries from a range of members and non-members you must have a hell of a job.

          2. Ron, the main cause of the issue you are experiencing is that the platform the community is built on developed a bug with its last update, about a month ago – see thread Notification errors.

Where the notification is about a new post, it links cleanly. If it’s a reply to a reply, there will be a navigational back-arrow above the user’s name (as in this case), which will take you to the right palce. If it’s a reply to a main post, you’re on your own. 😉

Oh, also, re stringing conversations together, that would require a) people to always actively respond to the specific message, and b) the platform to support threading within threading (which it don’t).

  3. Rick, Explaining the purpose of that arrow near the top is so helpful! Thanks. I can now make some sense of at least some of the notifications I receive. And thanks again.

  4. Holly, just a practical question – is the 14 days from the day you sign up or 14 days from the offer day? I’d definitely like to do it, it’s just a matter of the best timing in the circumstances…

  5. Two technical questions, Holly.

It says “before 31 March 2020”. Is that before the beginning of, or before the end of? (Do I need to redeem it today, or can I leave it until tomorrow? And how precise is the cut-off?)

Secondly, 14 free days. Is that a clean 336 hours? Or will it be cut off at the end of a calendar day, in which case is it a generous or restrictive 14 day? (If I activate it tomorrow – Tuesday – how much of Tuesday 14 April do I get?)
