Enjoyed reading this, having just come from Harry Bingham’s excellent blog on plotting. I’d have to say I’m both as well, like many of you above. I use structuring template which I’ve made myself and is a combination of the various ones out there. But I start with the main character and something I have felt was going to happen to them and I have to do some scribbling of scenes and backstories before I begin to feel a structure coming on. Then once I feel I have a story, I do work very hard, and don’t love it either, on making sure there’s a coherent structure. At the point where I think I’m going to choke on the structure I just start the first draft – it will be awful anyway. Then I can fiddle with structure and plot points in subsequent rewrites. So – I’d say both are necessary in whatever mix you find they work best.
