  • Word count and page numbers.

When I started writing this novel, back in 2010, I never had a plan on how long it was going to be, how many words I was going to type or how many chapters would fill the book.

Over time, and looking at my own collection of books and novels, I soon realized, I wanted my book to be about 350 – 400 pages long. Word count … unknown.

Today, after writing successful for the past 7-8 weeks, I have reached 330 pages and 85,600 words. And I have never been so happy on how close I am, to finally finishing the first draft.

When you guys start to write a new novel, do you have a page and word count in mind? Have you been successful in reaching those numbers, or have you gone over them, because your story becomes bigger than you expected?

    Hello Karen

You’ve done very well to have achieved 85,600 words in what is really a short time. That’s already an acceptable length but any more leaves scope for cutting, if you need to.

    Good luck with your book.

Karen, congratulation for keeping going for so long. The figures floating round in my head are 100,000. Apart from a mental path for the narative I don’t really plan, I just see where the story and in particular the voices take me. Then start to worry when it gets over 150,000. Don’t concern your self with pages. It’s the number of words, font and size that determine length. Good luck.

Well done for persevering with your novel. Remember it’s just the first draft. You can cut and add text to your heart’s content as you continue to rewrite. Anything between 80,000 and 120,000 words is pretty safe, depending on the genre.

Hi Karen – I don’t know if this will be helpful, but I tend to start with a first draft of 75-85k in mind, then I can plan to be one third through by 25k, two thirds by 50k, etc. This helps me with pacing. I always add a little more in subsequent drafts and then cut back again in edits. I’ve been reading that agents are seeking word counts on the lower side these days, due to attention spans and costs of production. Good luck with your novel.
