When someone else's writing hits you hard
As I grow older fewer and fewer things surprise me, but last night i took a hit; a written hit. I saw a combination of music and words that combined so well, i couldn’t help but be deeply moved.
The combination was Max Richter’s composed piece, On the Nature of Daylight and the lyrics of “This Bitter Earth” (Dinah Washington), which strangely were not sung, even though written lyrics were running. I was listening on spotify.
I looked to the track as it was playing, because i wanted to save it, and then saw the running lyrics. The lines that hit me were:
And if my life is like the dust
Ooh, that hides the glow of a rose
What good am i
Heaven only knows
In what state of mind do you need to be in, to write that?
I have heard the original of this bitter earth many times, but never really thought about this lyric, until in combination with Max Richter’s piece.
It really affected me…
Anyways, where’s that coffee…
