Iam finishing a book and having a challenging time finding the genre. The book is the life story of my dog that died half a year ago. The thing it is here story is told by her from the other side. It is fiction, that I am clear about as it was a stray dog that i got or she chose me when she was about one year old. She was on a shelter at a hotel in Greece where I worked, i then braught her to Sweden and we lived on various places in Sweden but also back to Greece for a year. Where should this fit in ina bookstore or library.

    Hi Bertil

I sympathise with your problem. It sounds like you have a heartwarming story to tell.

I think the first question must be: who is your primary intended reader? Adult or child? If it is child, then it is just a question of picking the right age category.

If it is adult, then I recommend you go on to Agentmatch and look at the genres listed. I suspect you will end up in commercial or general. If the story is humourous, you might be able to pitch it as that. I am not sure if Uplit is popular at the moment, but it does not appear in Jericho’s list of genres.

Going into a specific agent’s details may give you more options.

Do you have comparative titles? A quick search of Amazon brought me Conversations with Dog, by Jonathan Robinson. Sometimes the comparative titles point you towards the genre. What film is it most like?

I’m sorry I could not be of more help, but I hope this gives you some pointers.

Very best of luck with it.
