Just an hour to go until August’s final The Writing Room and today, I’m particularly excited to attend my first Open Mic afterwards as well! As always, I’ll be here after both events for a little while to chat all things writing.

    Hi Emily

Just remind me again how the open mic session works please?

Hi Kevin, lovely to hear from you! So the Open Mic will be from 5-6pm and we give members the chance to read an extract from their work in progress. These are selected before hand, as we let everyone know the deadline for sending them in and let the chosen few know ahead of time.

This is one of the 50 word stories I was working on that Anna said she wanted to see.

(title not included in word count!)

    She sleeps lightly

For years she lay awake, listening for the return of fledglings, burning the candle late. The turn of a key, the creak of a stair, needing to know they were home, safe, before her own eyes could rest. Now flown, their phantom clicks and shadow steps still haunt her slumber.

Oh Lesley, it is so atmospheric and chilling, but also quietly beautiful. In such a short space, you have conveyed so much. Probably does not help that I’ve been listening to an excellent horror podcast recently…

Love it, Lesley – tells such a story so succinctly.

I loved your piece. It represents parents’ anxiety for their children and reminds me of sneaking into my parents’ home in the early hours when I was a teenager.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind words and helpful suggestions. Honor, I’m looking forward to seeing your story in Mslexia – we’re all rooting for you!

Hi Grace, I really loved your extract! Best of luck with all your writing as well – how is your journey going?

Thank-you! I’ve been editing this book for a MILLION BILLION YEARS but I finally feel like I’m getting somewhere – the extract I read is from the new first chapter, which (hopefully!) solves some problems identified by the agents in my 1:1s at last year’s Festival…let’s see how I get on this year!

Well, that hard work is definitely paying off. That’s so exciting and I’ll be there in October, so looking forward to seeing you! Hopefully you can tell me all about how much the agents loved your work.

I know the feeling. Good luck with the 1:1s

I have been a member for all of 5 minutes, and these prompts are one of the things I was hoping to find! I won’t be able to join the next meeting due to medical procedures, but I would love to participate week after next! I have all sorts of questions about how to move around this site, meet the community, etc. 😀

Hi Patricia and a warm welcome to the wonderful world of Jericho Writers! If you have any questions, I would love to help – so just fire away.

It is great to hear that you find those resources helpful; that’s exactly what I wanted to achieve by keeping a record of them. Of course, I look forward to seeing you there. Also, I want to draw your attention to our Ask Us Anything event this Thursday, which is where our Premium Members can put their questions to us directly. It might be useful, if you’re free.
