Hi Alison, it is lovely to hear from you! So, if you have registered, you will get a reminder email with the link for the room. This forum is just a place to discuss all things writing afterwards.

Hi Emily. I won’t be here this week. Visiting relatives with a dodgy internet connection. Love to everyone x

    Hi Emily

I am still not getting the emails. If you can send me the link at some point that would be good, thanks.

So, how did we all get on today?

today I have been doing a scripting exercise: Write a two scene script, one page per scene, with no dialogue (so that the stage directions effectively define the story the audience sees – this is supposed to help with showing and not telling). The two scenes should be before and after some sort of event (eg the main character going on a date).

Just for fun, here’s my first draft. (Note, I don’t really understand scripting layout conventions, and since there is no dialogue, maybe they don’t matter that much in this case:

Hmm, I can’t seem to get cut and paste to work, so here’s the draft as an attachment. Not to be taken too seriously, it is just a bit of fun.

Hi Dave, I’ve just had a quick read through of this. What an interesting writing exercise!

I got such a keen sense of Oppenheimer’s moral conflict and ultimate guilt through the progression of the two scenes. With the second scene, I wonder if it could be trimmed slightly to increase the impact of that final image? This is of course just my personal opinion.

Thanks – yes, I think there are quite a few tweeks that might improve it. The brief also required us to produce something shocking. The best one so far is where, in the first scene, the character is preparing to go out on a date. In the second scene it is revealed that the date was with a dog. I found that a bit disturbing – but then I guess that is what theatre is for……

I mean, it’s still a great initial draft! That makes a lot of sense in the subversive nature of that final image now then.

Wow, that is certainly shocking! I guess there are often very few limits in theatre though. It reminds me slightly of the Cabaret song If You Could See Her, though that is more allegorical to the wider story of the musical and indeed of history. That final line always shocks a crowd!
