On Tuesday, I did a live edit session for our friends in Premium Membership<\/a>. (And yes, I\u2019m going to come back to the agent etiquette thing soon. Just wanted to hit this editing theme while it\u2019s fresh in my mind.<\/em>) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the webinar (which Premium Members can replay here<\/a>), I found myself using a technique for the first time and I found it strangely useful. I found it helpful as a way to explain what I was thinking editorially. But I realised that it can also be really valuable for solving editing problems on one’s own manuscript. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what I mean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s take a chunk of made-up text. In the edit session, we reviewed a piece involving a funeral, so here\u2019s my version of something similar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ground was iron, frost glittering wherever the sun hadn\u2019t found it.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One group had come in matching pink T-shirts worn beneath dark coats. My dad was in the middle of it somehow. That unsteady walk of his, those trusting spaniel eyes. How did he always get looked after? The T-shirts were advertising some charity thing that the Aunt Jem must have been involved in, but the attempt at buddiness felt a little breathy, a little forced. My dad always gets looked after, somehow. I didn\u2019t know why. I stood apart from the other mourners, drinking coffee from a paper cup.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few snowflakes fell. Funeral weather.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad found himself in the middle of the pink T-shirt mob. A couple of people hugged him.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m wearing dark jeans, a black shirt. It feels like clubbing gear, not proper funeral wear.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I hope that feels like there\u2019s something alive in that piece \u2013 but also muddled. None of the sentences feel bad, but we don\u2019t quite know where to look when. The flow is missing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technique I used in the webinar was simple: I just started colouring different bits in different ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we\u2019d apply one colour for PLACE \/<\/strong> WEATHER<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019d have another colour for PINK T-SHIRT GANG<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019d have another colour for DAD<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019d have a fourth colour for SELF-REFLECTION<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So our Crayola-ed up text now looks like this: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ground was iron, frost glittering wherever the sun hadn\u2019t found it.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One group had come in matching pink T-shirts worn beneath dark coats. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad was in the middle of it somehow. That unsteady walk of his, those trusting spaniel eyes. How did he always get looked after? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The T-shirts were advertising some charity thing that the Aunt Jem must have been involved in, but the attempt at buddiness felt a little breathy, a little forced. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad always gets looked after, somehow. I never knew why. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stood apart from the other mourners, drinking coffee from a paper cup.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What that does \u2013 apart from creating an eyesore \u2013 is make it incredibly clear how the text is \/ isn\u2019t flowing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our task isn\u2019t necessarily to make all the colours join up. For example, it\u2019s perfectly normal if references to physical place \/ weather etc are dotted throughout the text. And not just normal, but positively good \u2013 constant small references keep us rooted in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, fragments of personal reflection ought to be dotted through the text for the same reason: to keep the presence of reflective self alive throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that doesn\u2019t necessarily go for the \u2018Pink T-shirt mob\u2019 text, and it may not apply to the dad-related text either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless there\u2019s a reason for those things not to join up, they should probably join up. So that turns our text into something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ground was iron, frost glittering wherever the sun hadn\u2019t found it.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One group had come in matching pink T-shirts worn beneath dark coats.<\/em> The T-shirts were advertising some charity thing that the Aunt Jem must have been involved in, but the attempt at buddiness felt a little breathy, a little forced.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad found himself in the middle of the pink T-shirt mob. A couple of people hugged him.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My dad was in the middle of it somehow<\/s>. That unsteady walk of his, those trusting spaniel eyes. How did he always get looked after? My dad always gets looked after, somehow. <\/s>I never knew.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s basically the same text, except that three things have happened:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, we found some obviously duplicative text and killed it. That just brightens the whole passage \u2013 it says the same thing with fewer words and fewer moments of stalling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, we\u2019ve achieved a rational flow here that runs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Physical scene setting<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Focus in on one group of mourners, but not v intimately. (We don\u2019t know these people, they\u2019re described as though from distance.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Focus in on day (more intimate \u2013 he\u2019s dad, we\u2019re commenting on type of eyes.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Consider self<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Nudge scene setting again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Notice that the sequence runs from (A) more distant view with no inner reflection through to (B) completely up close and personal view with direct inner reflection. That feels nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And third, in doing this, we\u2019ve achieved a small but complete emotional movement, which runs like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. It\u2019s cold, but there\u2019s some sun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Those people in pink \u2013 don\u2019t really like them<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. But hey, dad always gets looked after. He gets hugged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. I\u2019m alone & wearing the wrong stuff<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Now it\u2019s snowing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      It\u2019s as though the weather has turned crueller because the narrator comes to feel his own wrongness. The yellow at top and bottom of the revised text is basically telling us, \u201cthis emotional movement is now complete \u2013 we\u2019re ready for the next emotional beat\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I think there\u2019s more to say on this, and maybe I\u2019ll pick this up in a future email, but I think there\u2019s quite a lot of power here already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The takeaway? If a scene is feeling alive but mushy \u2013 confused, somehow \u2013 then the Crayola technique is a strangely powerful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
