She\u2019s agreed to share her experience of the course with us month by month. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow,\u00a0month two already \u2013 how time flies!\u00a0Suffice to say, I am fully immersed in the course and loving every minute.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month,&nbsp;we\u2019ve&nbsp;been focused on point of view.&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;always gone with \u2018what feels right\u2019 for POV choices and,&nbsp;admittedly,&nbsp;will sometimes get tens of thousands of words into a&nbsp;draft&nbsp;then&nbsp;decide I MUST switch it up.&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;definitely guilty&nbsp;of treating a POV change as a \u2018magic bullet\u2019 for all everything that&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;working. But the work this month \u2013 including our Lead Tutor call from&nbsp;Holly Seddon \u2013 made me&nbsp;realise that&nbsp;POV&nbsp;can be a much more deliberate and nuanced choice.&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;not promising that I&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;flip-flop on POV in future drafts, but if I do, it will&nbsp;definitely be&nbsp;a more informed decision!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I\u00a0<em>have to<\/em>\u00a0mention my first official round of tutor feedback, because this\u00a0was a big deal\u00a0for me.\u00a0While Holly had\u00a0taken a look\u00a0at my plan already,\u00a0she\u2019d\u00a0not read\u00a0any of my actual draft until now. And having my writing reviewed by an author whose work I admire? More than a little\u00a0nerve-wracking!\u00a0I delayed opening the email until I was home, in case\u00a0it was overwhelming.\u00a0Honestly,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0glad I did because the second I read it, I was grinning and kicking my feet! Holly had written the loveliest things! Praise for the lines I thought worked, laughter in all the right places and constructive feedback on how to sharpen the passage \u2013 all of which I agreed with.\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0nothing more validating than having an author whose work\u00a0you enjoy, write positive\u00a0and helpful\u00a0things about your draft. It was\u00a0exactly\u00a0the\u00a0boost\u00a0I needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following on from this, we had a one-to-one in which I was able to sound out a new idea I had for the manuscript. In the past,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0talked myself out of\u00a0changes that felt too wild or\u00a0ambitious but\u00a0being able to talk it through with Holly was a complete game-changer. She wisely\u00a0advised\u00a0me that it can often be some of the more\u00a0\u2018whacky\u2019\u00a0ideas that are\u00a0<em>exactly\u00a0<\/em>what a manuscript needs (especially if you as a writer are casting about for these).\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0excited to be implementing my plan to help make my story even\u00a0twistier,\u00a0so, watch this space&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our tutor group workshops,&nbsp;we\u2019ve&nbsp;played around with point of view and narrative distance (the latter took some time to get my head around).&nbsp;The interactive element to these&nbsp;sessions&nbsp;has&nbsp;been so fun and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;given me even greater appreciation of everyone\u2019s creative abilities!&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;also just enjoyable to have a play with writing, especially when&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;been so head-down in my manuscript.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was one week this month when life was just too busy for me to manage the&nbsp;homework. What I appreciate so much about the course is that this was&nbsp;totally fine!&nbsp;There\u2019s&nbsp;such an understanding amongst the tutors and&nbsp;other course members that life can sometimes get in the way.&nbsp;After all, we all have other commitments, be it work, caring responsibilities, health etc.&nbsp;I was so&nbsp;grateful to be&nbsp;able to step back for a week,&nbsp;then&nbsp;pick back up with the content when I was able. I struggle with&nbsp;writers&#8217;&nbsp;guilt on the days I&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;progress my manuscript, so I was very thankful that there was no&nbsp;additional&nbsp;pressure from the course.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0my learning point from this month?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> It\u00a0has to\u00a0be about\u00a0<strong>intention<\/strong>. Holly quite rightly challenged me\u00a0to think about\u00a0some of the decisions in my manuscript \u2013 mostly because they\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0decisions at all,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0just fallen into the ideas.\u00a0They \u2018felt right\u2019 (I\u2019m\u00a0learning that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0somewhat of a \u2018vibes\u2019 writer at times!)\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0realised it can be so helpful to wind back and think about the WHY. Why this point of view, why this level of narrative distance, why this setting, this character?\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not\u00a0that I think my choices\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0valid, but if\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0more intentional, I can use them to my advantage. And\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0is where I think I can\u00a0really elevate my writing.\u00a0So,\u00a0if I were to share any tips from this month, it would be that \u2013 think about what\u00a0key\u00a0choices\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0made for your book\u00a0and either lean into them or switch it up.\u00a0It\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0matter which, as long as\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0intentional<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Want to follow in Rachel&#8217;s footsteps?
