Hello again!\u00a0Welcome to the final\u00a0blog\u00a0in my series of\u00a0monthly\u00a0insights into what\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0like to undertake the\u00a0Ultimate Novel Writing Programme<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, we\u2019re here: month 12. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A year ago, I joined the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme hoping to learn how to write a better novel. What I didn\u2019t expect was that it would change how I understood myself as a writer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think back to my initial decision – that this<\/em> was the year I would apply for the course. I\u2019m reminded of the definition of success I set myself, so I could judge whether the time and expense had been worthwhile. I expected to leave the Ultimate Novel Writing Programme with sharper tools, clearer habits, bigger ambitions, better plotting ability… fixes for my nascent manuscript. Greater discipline, overall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I expected to know exactly what questions to ask of myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I didn\u2019t <\/em>expect was to leave with fewer technical questions, but larger and more meaningful ones. Because when craft becomes embodied, the questions stop being mechanical and start becoming existential. At first, I worried this meant I had lost curiosity. In fact, it meant I had crossed a threshold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this course has given me is not just skill, but self-trust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer I was a year ago chased hooks. The writer I am now trusts accumulation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer I was a year ago tried to sound like \u201ca writer.\u201d The writer I am now recognises my own voice.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer I was a year ago thought I needed to write fast books. The writer I am now knows I write deep ones. And that isn\u2019t a flaw\u2014it\u2019s a signature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, back to that moment of decision. 12 months ago, I told myself that, even if nothing else were to come out of this year, I\u2019d be happy if I could get to the point where my tutor, a two-times Booker shortlisted author, said of my work: \u201cThis is good. I like it.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When that day came \u2013 after being guided and challenged throughout by my tutor \u2013 it was a moment of coalescence. A bringing together of not only who I am as a writer, but why <\/em>I write, and what a meaningful writing life looks like for me.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The writer I was a year ago used to think in terms of \u201cHow do I write a great novel?\u201d. The writer I am now is confident and happy to ask, \u201cHow do I behave in a way that makes a great novel possible?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the course ends, I am realising this isn\u2019t an ending so much as a change in how I walk into the work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Ultimate Novel Writing Programme<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0did not simply improve my manuscript. It altered my relationship with\u00a0writing\u00a0itself.\u00a0I leave it not with certainty, but with something far more durable: clarity about who I am as a writer, and the resilience to keep going.\u00a0That, I suspect, is where the real work\u00a0truly\u00a0begins.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
