{"id":861717,"date":"2025-12-19T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/?p=861717"},"modified":"2025-12-18T14:50:05","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T14:50:05","slug":"jumping-off-cliffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/jumping-off-cliffs\/","title":{"rendered":"Jumping off cliffs\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ray Bradbury, the&nbsp;author of&nbsp;<em>Farenheit&nbsp;451<\/em>&nbsp;and much else, was&nbsp;a&nbsp;fan of the future.&nbsp;A&nbsp;fan of boldness&nbsp;and technological&nbsp;adventure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u00a0an interview with\u00a0the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, he said,\u00a0\u201cIf we listened to our intellect,\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0never have\u00a0a\u00a0love\u00a0affair.\u00a0We\u2019d\u00a0never have\u00a0a\u00a0friendship.\u00a0We\u2019d\u00a0never go into business because\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0be cynical: \u2018It\u2019s\u00a0gonna\u00a0go wrong.\u2019 Or \u2018She\u2019s going to hurt me.\u2019 Or \u2018I had\u00a0a\u00a0couple of bad love\u00a0affairs so therefore \u2026\u2019\u00a0Well, that\u2019s nonsense.\u00a0You\u2019re\u00a0going to miss life.\u00a0You\u2019ve\u00a0got to jump off the cliff\u00a0all the time\u00a0and build your wings on the way down.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That cliff-jumper is you.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;me.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;all of us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;certainly true&nbsp;for&nbsp;any first-time novelist. My first book was&nbsp;a&nbsp;giant 180,000 words long. (And yes, it went to print&nbsp;at that length.&nbsp;And no,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;not&nbsp;a&nbsp;length that&nbsp;publishers&nbsp;are especially looking for. But if&nbsp;a&nbsp;book is good enough,&nbsp;the length is&nbsp;kinda&nbsp;immaterial.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was na\u00efve. I&nbsp;literally had&nbsp;no idea&nbsp;that&nbsp;writing&nbsp;a&nbsp;book&nbsp;and getting it published might be hard. I just&nbsp;assumed I could do&nbsp;it,&nbsp;and&nbsp;would do it.&nbsp;My&nbsp;track record&nbsp;(Oxford University, fancy&nbsp;American bank)&nbsp;was one of&nbsp;achievement. I knew I liked reading.&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;always&nbsp;assumed&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;end up being&nbsp;an&nbsp;author. So:&nbsp;write&nbsp;a&nbsp;book&nbsp;\u2013 how hard could it be? I knew how to write&nbsp;a&nbsp;sentence, so just do that&nbsp;over&nbsp;and over,&nbsp;and&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;have&nbsp;a&nbsp;book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone\u00a0receiving this email is less na\u00efve.\u00a0The tone of voice needed for\u00a0a\u00a0fast commercial\u00a0adventure-caper was not the same tone\u00a0as that had produced success in Oxford philosophy essays. Once\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0written 180,000 words, I looked back\u00a0at the start\u00a0and realised it was \u2026\u00a0ahem, in need of vigorous editing. The kind of editing that\u00a0involved selecting 60,000 words\u00a0and hitting Delete.\u00a0So\u00a0I\u00a0deleted\u00a0the rubbish\u00a0and rewrote it.\u00a0Wrote it better.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;a&nbsp;failure. It was the second most&nbsp;important step&nbsp;on the road to success. The most important was writing the first word, the first sentence, the first paragraph, the first chapter.&nbsp;The most&nbsp;important step&nbsp;is&nbsp;always the same:&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;jumping off the cliff in the first place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deleting 60,000 words was the next crucial step:&nbsp;acknowledging that what&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;done&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;good enough; that&nbsp;more work could fix it; that I needed to design&nbsp;and use some better wings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;get to the better-wing-design stage until&nbsp;you\u2019ve&nbsp;got to the plummeting-downwards-out-of-control stage.&nbsp;You need them both.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And honestly: the challenges&nbsp;probably get&nbsp;a&nbsp;little&nbsp;bit less&nbsp;as you&nbsp;write&nbsp;more books, get them published, get paid, learn the industry, build&nbsp;a&nbsp;readership.&nbsp;But each book is its own cliff \u2013 its own well of uncertainty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;you&nbsp;know,&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;a&nbsp;huge believer in nailing&nbsp;an elevator pitch before you start writing. I&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;care&nbsp;about&nbsp;pretty formulations&nbsp;\u2013 I&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;mind whether you have the kind of phrase that would look good on&nbsp;a&nbsp;book jacket or&nbsp;movie poster. But&nbsp;a&nbsp;list of ingredients that would spark interest in&nbsp;a&nbsp;potential book-buyer?&nbsp;That\u2019s&nbsp;essential.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;oh&nbsp;sweet lord, there is&nbsp;a&nbsp;huge gap between knowing that you have, in theory,&nbsp;a&nbsp;commercially&nbsp;viable&nbsp;novel&nbsp;and&nbsp;actually making&nbsp;it so.&nbsp;I have sometimes&nbsp;written&nbsp;books that flowed, start to finish, with no huge&nbsp;mid-point challenges, but those have been the exception.&nbsp;Mostly,&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;been&nbsp;a&nbsp;hole \u2013&nbsp;a&nbsp;gap \u2013&nbsp;a&nbsp;problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m&nbsp;not&nbsp;a&nbsp;huge fan of pre-planning novels in vast detail. (But&nbsp;do what you like:&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;whatever works for you.)&nbsp;The only way to find that hole is to leap off the cliff.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;the flying through the&nbsp;air that tells you what wings you need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So&nbsp;jump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be uncertain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jump&nbsp;anyway.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take&nbsp;the biggest boldest leap you can, knowing that you&nbsp;don\u2019t&nbsp;have the answers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just jump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jump knowing that your wings&nbsp;aren\u2019t&nbsp;ready.&nbsp;They get born by jumping.&nbsp;Wings that&nbsp;surprise you&nbsp;and delight you&nbsp;and complete you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So&nbsp;jump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good luck.&nbsp;And happy Christmas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FEEDBACK FRIDAY&nbsp;\/&nbsp;Sharing your darlings<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;Christmas.
