Whether you&#8217;re working on a thriller, a romance, a fantasy epic, or even a literary darling, the plot twist is the literary version of a mic drop &#8211; and readers absolutely eat it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But why do we love plot twists so much? And more importantly, how do you pull one off without making readers roll their eyes so hard they sprain something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s twist again, like we did last chapter&#8230; (Ba du dum.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why plot twists are so addictive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plot twists are the espresso shot in your story cappuccino. They jolt readers awake. They make people text their friends at 2 a.m. with \u201cYOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.\u201d They\u2019re proof that the author is five steps ahead, cackling behind the scenes, and we love being fooled like that.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good twist does three things:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surprises the reader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Makes sense in hindsight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Changes the direction or emotional tone of the story.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When done well, twists make readers feel smart for spotting the clues &#8211; or wonderfully blindsided if they didn\u2019t. Either way, it\u2019s a win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plot twists across genres<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to write a psychological thriller to serve up a killer twist (though, let\u2019s be real, they practically require one).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to tailor twists to different genres:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Crime \/ Thriller \/ Mystery<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plot twist is your bread and butter here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Classic moves<\/em>: The killer was the narrator. The victim faked their death. The detective was the criminal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Pro tip<\/em>: Leave breadcrumbs, but scatter them wide enough that readers miss the loaf.
