It\u2019s a bloody minefield, isn\u2019t it? If anything (other than writing a synopsis) is going to turn us into inarticulate, sweating messes, this is it. But honestly, genre needn\u2019t be that complicated.<br><br>A big reason we get in such a muddle is that there <em>is<\/em> a muddle over what genre \u201cmeans\u201d. Each of these is a basic \u201cgenre\u201d of furniture, with specific elements we recognise and expect. For example: legs so it stands on the floor; a surface to sit on; some kind of backrest (ta-dah! A Chair). A Chair can be metal, wood, plastic; cheap or expensive; French-made or Chinese. But if I go to a furniture store for a chair, and I\u2019m shown something <em>without<\/em> these key elements (or worse, something that\u2019s half-chair, half-lamp), I\u2019ll be pretty annoyed.<br><br>Main <strong>Story<\/strong> genres (not an exhaustive list) include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thriller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Performance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coming-of-age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As with different \u201cfurniture genres\u201d, each has certain elements and conventions (even tropes) readers will expect. For example, the core conventions of a Crime story include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(Discovery of) a crime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A detective who investigates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red herrings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The villain is unmasked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Core Love story conventions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lovers meet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First kiss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lovers break up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proof of love<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lovers commit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If I pick up a book expecting a Love story (because the cover or blurb suggest that it is), but it doesn\u2019t fulfil these conventions, I\u2019m going to be annoyed and hurl the book on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut won\u2019t that make my book boring, if my Love story has the same things in it as every other Love story?\u201d<br><br>No! Because just as you can create a Chair that\u2019s the most unique and innovative Chair ever seen, you can write the most unique and innovative Love Story ever. It doesn\u2019t matter that your chair is still fundamentally a Chair. Ditto, the fact that your story *is* recognisably a Love story is not going to put readers off \u2014 quite the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trick is not to break or ignore the conventions, but <strong>innovate<\/strong> them.<br><br>Here are some of my favourite examples of stories that innovate brilliantly on their basic genre conventions (or tropes). (Recognise them? Answers at the end!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Genre<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Genre Conventions\/Tropes<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Innovation<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Love<\/td><td>Girl meets boy<\/td><td>Boy is vampire<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Crime<\/td><td>Detective who investigates<\/td><td>Detectives are ten-year-olds Grace and Tilly<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Action<\/td><td>Bad guy(s) threaten a community<\/td><td>Jaws \u2014 but in space<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Psych Thriller<\/td><td>Man murders wife<\/td><td>Woman sets up husband for the death penalty by faking her own murder<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Performance<\/td><td>Music\/sports\/arts team compete for a prize<\/td><td>Jamaican athletes enter Winter Olympics<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Coming of age<\/td><td>A naive protagonist must learn complexities of adult world<\/td><td>Naive protagonist becomes Empowered Woman by dancing the Mambo with Patrick Swayze<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Top tips:<br><\/strong><br>1. Get clear on the Story (not \u201cmarketing\u201d) genre you\u2019re writing. A clue can be the stories you love to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Read (or watch) lots of examples, especially \u201cmasterworks\u201d. Pull out the recurring elements: these are your genre conventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Make sure you honour these in your own story. Readers will expect them, so don\u2019t let them down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Use your creative powers to innovate the conventions. What version of the \u201cmeet cute\u201d have we never seen? How is your detective different to the many other fictional detectives? What\u2019s a brilliantly original \u201chero-at-the-mercy-of-the-villain\u201d scene (don\u2019t tie them to chair AGAIN!)?<br><br>I hope this whistle-stop tour of Story Genre has been helpful.
