All You Need To Know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Despite having been branded as an \u2018emerging\u2019 market for the last ten years, new adult fiction remains shrouded in heated debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst it has acquired cult status among readers and authors alike, there are a great many publishers who are reluctant to acknowledge it as an established category. The question is -why?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer this question for you, I will define new adult fiction, include some examples, and suggest tips for writing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, I will explain how you might want to tackle these controversies in your submissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"What-Is-New-Adult-Fiction\"><strong>What Is New Adult Fiction? <\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New adult fiction books (NA) are narratives that explore the transition from late adolescence to early adulthood. They&#8217;re considered the next step after young adult fiction and they&#8217;re typically aimed towards readers aged 18-25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s less a genre and more a subcategory of either YA or adult fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protagonists in NA titles, much like their demographic, are new to \u201cadulting\u201d and don\u2019t yet feel like functional adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topics frequently explored in these stories are:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moving away from home for the first time&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starting higher education&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deeper exploration of sexual experiences, identity and gender&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing careers&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Figuring out relationships \u2013 familial, platonic and romantic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>NA helps maturing readers, who are new to adulthood, find their footing\u2026 at least this is what many believe it&#8217;s for. Naturally, there&#8217;s some speculation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"The-Controversy-Of-New-Adult-Fiction\"><strong>The Controversy Of New Adult Fiction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When NA first came onto the scene in around 2009 \u2013 thanks to a competition run by St Martin Press &#8211; the response was essentially<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-write-sex-for-young-adult-audience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> YA fiction but notched up a gear<\/a>. This included the sexual content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t long until the new adult genre was characterised as thinly veiled erotica that took place at university. This in itself is no bad thing; people can read and write what they want. The hitch is that the refrain that NA titles are just YA romance novels with more sex still plagues the category today and this has made it hard to market and sensibly shelve in bookshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deirdre Power, an assistant editor at Usborne, said \u2018while there\u2019s a really valid reason for children\u2019s books to be divided into age categories, you can\u2019t generally say the same for adult fiction.\u2019 Once eighteen, readers are simply trusted to make their own decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the popularity of Sally Rooney\u2019s <em>Normal People<\/em>, featuring university aged characters, demonstrates that adult readers are not typically dissuaded from reading titles with younger protagonists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They <em>may<\/em> be dissuaded, however, if a book&#8217;s marketed for a specific age range. This means positioning a book away from a mass of readers who would have otherwise bought it. This is why NA can be vague as a marketing ploy. After all, does <em>anyone<\/em> ever really feel like an adult?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"833\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction.jpg\" alt=\"young-man-reading-how-to-write-new-adult-fiction\" class=\"wp-image-550433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction.jpg 833w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/how-to-write-new-adult-fiction-640x384.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, new adult books have not gone away, and the<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/complete-guide-to-writing-sex-in-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> sexual content<\/a> they sometimes contain is becoming less of a concern. Laura Bennett at the Liverpool Literary Agency said \u2018in my experience, I\u2019ve found that publishers are trying to be more sex positive. I think Tik Tok has a huge part to play in this.\u2019 As a result, she\u2019s found that publishers are increasingly asking for titles with \u201ccrossover potential\u201d \u2026 which is essentially jargon for new adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura speculated that the perpetual grey area <em>could<\/em> be attributed to a wider issue with age ranges in the YA market. \u2018YA has become such a huge bracket. Is it 12-18yr olds or is it 16-18yr olds? Children are always going to read older than they are. But equally, I wouldn\u2019t want my 10yr old reading upper YA because it\u2019s in the 12+ section\u2019. If there was consistent delineation, it would help with marketing <em>and<\/em> shelving. \u2018We have to nurture mature readers, while still protecting younger readers. There needs to be that balance. If you insert new adult into the opposite end of that scale, it gives us the opportunity to say \u201cYes, this is for older readers, but it is still fairly safe\u201d\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This begs the question though\u2026 what actually sets YA and NA apart?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"New-Adult-Vs-Young-Adult-Fiction\"><strong>New Adult Vs Young Adult Fiction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-learn-the-market-for-ya-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Young adult fiction<\/a> titles are books written for readers aged 13 &#8211; 18. With teenaged protagonists, they explore the challenges of adolescence or coming of age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Adult Fiction differs in 5 key areas:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Target audience<\/strong> \u2013 NA\u2019s target audience is both older and broader. It&#8217;s targeted at 18-25 year olds, though many believe it&#8217;s 18-30.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Word count<\/strong> \u2013 Whereas YA is usually around 60,000 words, NA titles can be anything up to 120,000. NA authors can get into politics, themes and worldbuilding a lot more.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content<\/strong> \u2013 NA titles can provide more detail with their \u2018adult\u2019 content. This includes more swearing, violence, sex and drugs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Voice<\/strong> \u2013 NA protagonists have a different set of priorities and concerns than their younger counterparts. They&#8217;re older but not on an equal footing with adults that possess well-established careers, families, and lifestyles.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Themes<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; NA focuses on three areas of identity: romance, career and worldview. There are more mature themes with more complexity than in YA. <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/literary-agents-for-young-adult-fiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YA <\/a>often focuses on the external, whereas NA focuses on the internal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Examples-Of-New-Adult-Titles\"><strong>Examples Of New Adult Titles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>A Court of Thorns and Roses <\/em>by Sarah J Maas <\/strong>\u2013 After killing a faerie, 19-year-old Feyre is held hostage. This popular <em>Beauty and the Beast<\/em> adaptation is darker, sexier and grittier than YA.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Fangirl<\/em> by Rainbow Rowell<\/strong> \u2013 When identical twins Cath and Wren head to college, they must each find their place, dealing with independence and social anxiety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Black Buck<\/em> by Mateo Askaripour<\/strong> \u2013 22-year-old Darren ditches his job as a barista and becomes a salesman who&#8217;ll do anything to get ahead. This explores the challenges of racism in the workforce, establishing a first career and balancing life.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>The Incendiaries<\/em> by R O Kwon <\/strong>\u2013 Will starts at Edwards College and turns his back on religion, then he and his friend get involved with a cult. This explores worldview, grief and self-identity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Exciting Times<\/em> by Naoise Dolan<\/strong> \u2013 22-year-old Ava moves to Hong Kong and strikes a relationship with British banker Julian. Things get complicated, however, when she meets Edith.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>If We Were Villains <\/em>by M L Rio<\/strong> &#8211; Seven young actors study Shakespeare at an elite college, until one of them is found dead. Your themes need to feel reflective of where they are in life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Genre<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Given publishers\u2019 hesitancy acknowledging the term \u2018new adult\u2019 you may want to consider using other buzz words in your query letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend using the phrase \u2018XX with crossover appeal\u2019. If the setting&#8217;s firmly academic, then you may want to label your title as a \u2018campus novel\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Frequently-Asked-Questions\"><strong>Frequently Asked Questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is The Difference Between New Adult And Adult Fiction?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The new adult category is considered a subsection of adult fiction. New adult titles are aimed at 18\u201325-year-olds, and have older protagonists facing the new demands of legal agency and responsibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Writing NA Fiction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase in \u2018crossover appeal\u2019 on editors\u2019 wish lists speaks for itself.
