{"id":549062,"date":"2022-11-10T17:00:17","date_gmt":"2022-11-10T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/?p=549062"},"modified":"2023-09-21T11:44:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T10:44:25","slug":"the-rule-of-three-in-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/the-rule-of-three-in-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"The Rule Of Three In Writing: Our Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The \u2018rule of three\u2019 is as familiar to you and I as fairy tales like <em>Goldilocks and the Three Bears<\/em>, or genies who grant three wishes, or sayings like \u2018good things come in threes\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a rule we use all the time in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what makes three such a magic number?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when it comes to fiction, how can we use the rule of three in<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-become-a-better-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> writing<\/a>?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll cover:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the rule of three in writing?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples of the rule of three, and what it looks like in practice&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our tips and tricks for the rule of three as a writing principle&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequently asked questions&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is the rule of three, and how do you use it to engage readers in your own writing?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"What-Is-The-Rule-Of-Three\"><strong>What Is The Rule Of Three?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018rule of three\u2019 in writing is based on groups of three items being more memorable, emotionally resonant, and persuasive than simply one or two.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In literature, the scope is broad: from having the word \u2018three\u2019 in a novel\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-come-up-with-a-great-book-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">title<\/a>, to three characters\u2019 points of view (POVs), or even just using a three-act plot structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll delve into these later, so stay tuned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for now, why is the number three so established when it comes to storytelling?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer this question, I dug out my psychology textbooks and went trawling through the scientific research, as the overall consensus online is that three is the smallest grouping for pattern recognition in the human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frustratingly, there\u2019s not a lot of research to back this statement up.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I <em>did<\/em> find was an excellent resource, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/3679644\/The_Rule_of_Three_or_Four_and_Pairs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Rule of Three (or Four), and Pairs <\/em>by Professor Dominic Cheetham<\/a>, who expressed the same frustration and used his paper to explore the rule of three in writing (citing Ursula LeGuin, no less).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheetham\u2019s takeaways on the rule of three in literature:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Repetition is an established memory aid.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repetition can be used to signify importance, as in emotional intensity (and therefore significance).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repetition is core to persuasion, especially the number three.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheetham posited that three reasons are more convincing than one; this is supported by a two-part study from <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1509\/jm.11.0504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shu &amp; Carlson (2014)<\/a>, who found that three claims were the ticket to consumer persuasion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheetham went on to summarise that \u2018the rule of three is not just a rule of three or four things together, but a rule of sequential repetition \u2026 in a clear and meaningful order\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>i.e. there is semantic progression, which can become more complex, or even humorous, once a pair primes us for a third list item.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, there\u2019s a little background on why the rule of three is used in literature, and in life more generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we\u2019ll take a look at some examples.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"833\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-549125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three.jpg 833w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-rule-of-three-640x384.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"General-Examples-Of-The-Rule-Of-Three\"><strong>General Examples Of The Rule Of Three&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our love of triads has led to great case studies on the rule of three in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with real-world examples.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marketing&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018I\u2019m Lovin It\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McDonald\u2019s 2003 slogan has just three words but has lasted for 19 years (the fast-food brand\u2019s previous record was four years).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did anyone else <em>not<\/em> know this jingle is a Justin Timberlake song?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8216;Just Do It\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example of the power of three-word advertising slogans, Nike\u2019s motto was inspired by the last words of a death row prisoner, and that resonance carried.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Public Service&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Stay home. Protect the NHS. Save lives.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government\u2019s slogan from the COVID-19 lockdowns went for shock-factor with its implications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English common law oath is a judicial convention spanning the Western world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Religion&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fates: The Ancient Greek <em>Moirai<\/em> or Fates (Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos) were said to spin the threads of birth, life, death, and ultimately, destiny.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Trinity: In Christianity, this is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (one God in three persons), invoked during the ritual of baptism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Three Wise Men who travelled to see the baby Jesus are another example of three figures in the Christian faith.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Proverbs&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018<em>Omne trium perfectum<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Everything that comes in threes is perfect\u2019 is a long-standing Latin declaration for the rule of three.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018<em>Mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil\u2019 is based on the Japanese pictorial maxim of the Three Wise Monkeys.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Phrases&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ready, set, go\u2019: This shorter, more effective version of \u2018On your marks, get set, go\u2019 shows the power of brevity (and three words).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Blah, blah, blah\u2019: For an even simpler example of a three-word phrase, this triple-single idiom has roots in a similar expression from the 1800s.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" examine some modern and classic examples of the rule of three in writing and the creative industries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fables And Fairy Tales&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Circling back to <em>Goldilocks and the Three Bears<\/em>, this British fairy tale has more threes than you can poke three sticks at: three chairs, three bowls of porridge, three beds, and the eponymous three bears (who then go through the same chairs \/ porridge \/ beds shtick as Goldilocks, only to discover a pint-sized intruder in their midst).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can tell, repetition here is key.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With slightly less repetition, the fable <em>The Three Little Pigs<\/em>includes not only the three pigs, but also three houses built from increasingly hardy ingredients which they use to finally outsmart the Big Bad Wolf.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a Norwegian example, <em>De tre Bukkene Bruse<\/em> or <em>Three Billy Goats Gruff<\/em> is another well-known fairy tale that employs three goats, each bigger than the last, to trick a hungry bridge-blocking troll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Literature&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The category we\u2019ve all been waiting for!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for our first example, you can\u2019t go past Dickens\u2019 novella <strong><em>A Christmas Carol<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, the original Grinch, Ebenezer Scrooge, is visited by \u200b\u200bthree spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the rule of three in fiction <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-write-faster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing<\/a>, this story has the trifecta of repetition for memorability, big feelings, and of course, a dose of ghostly persuasion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Les Trois Mousquetaires <\/em>or<strong><em>The Three Musketeers<\/em><\/strong> by French author Alexandre Dumas, which gets points for having the number three in its title, follows d&#8217;Artagnan and his three swashbuckling heroes as they duel their way through Paris and London \u2014 for honour, naturally.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A less obvious example of the rule of three at work is by another Frenchman Jules Verne in his <strong><em>Around the World in Eighty Days<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After travelling to India, Phineas Fogg\u2019s group is a party of three; and when he returns to London, he\u2019s hit with three final ordeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The clincher? Fogg wins the book\u2019s titular bet with three minutes to go.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Plays&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Shakespeare\u2019s <strong><em>Macbeth<\/em><\/strong>, three witches (\u2018wayward sisters\u2019) visit the Scottish General Macbeth with the prophecy that he will become king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we know, this leads Macbeth down his dark, ambitious path, with tragic consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike Dickens\u2019 ghosts, the three witches spell trouble and temptation for Macbeth, their fateful words finally guiding his (stabbing) hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scarily meta example is one by the master of murder mystery tales herself, Agatha Christie, aptly called<strong> <em>Rule of Three<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This triple bill of one-act plays includes <em>Afternoon at the Seaside<\/em>, <em>The Rats<\/em> and <em>The Patient<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not to make this about Shakespeare again, but if we\u2019re talking plays, an oft-quoted line is his \u2018Friends, romans, countrymen, lend me your ears\u2019 from another well-known tragedy, <strong><em>Julius Caesar<\/em><\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Film&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably the world\u2019s most famous trilogy, the creator of the<strong> <em>Star Wars<\/em><\/strong> films,George Lucas upped the ante by planning prequel and sequel trilogies for a total of nine films in the space opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This opened up the three-act structure to a new, epic scale of storytelling \u2014 not to mention intellectual property.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The romantic comedy <strong><em>When Harry Met Sally<\/em><\/strong>is a cult 80s film with a flair for the rule of three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair meet three times before becoming friends, and after the final New Year&#8217;s Eve party, where \u2014 ***SPOILER ALERT*** \u2014 Harry declares his love for Sally and they kiss, they get married three months later.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Credit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/movies\/comments\/qwqeiv\/rules_of_three_in_signs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reddit<\/a> for reminding me that each key character in <strong><em>Signs<\/em><\/strong> has an identifying trait or issue that rears its head three times before the end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Television&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The rule of three or \u2018threefold law\u2019 in modern-day witchcraft was front and centre in <em>Charmed<\/em>, with three key characters (even when Shannon Doherty exited the show in season three): the three Halliwell sisters, who used their magical &#8216;power of three&#8217; to fight supernatural baddies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m including<em> Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em> in this list because: a.) it\u2019s brilliant; b.) Moira Rose\u2019s iconic \u2018Sunrise Bay\u2019 triple-slap is funnier than the Three Stooges\u2019; and c.) there is even an episode called \u2018The Throuple\u2019, where David, Stevie, and Jake take their accidental dating triangle to its comical conclusion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For anyone who watched <em>The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power<\/em>\u2019s season one finale, the three Elven rings are another recent example.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"833\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three.jpg\" alt=\"using-the-rule-of-three\" class=\"wp-image-549131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three.jpg 833w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three-600x360.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/using-the-rule-of-three-640x384.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"How-To-Use-The-Rule-Of-Three\"><strong>How To Use The Rule Of Three&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, now we know why three is such a magic number: because it\u2019s effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do we use the rule of three in writing?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are three examples of how to use the rule of three:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three-Act Structure&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The simplest way to utilise the rule of three is with a three-act structure, which is a fancy way of saying your story should have a beginning to set things up, a middle for the confrontation of your <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/what-is-a-central-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">central conflict<\/a>, and an end where things are resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get technical, the three acts are as follows:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first act begins with exposition (setting the scene), an inciting incident for the protagonist, and a turning point into act two.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next comes the rising action, which leads into the story\u2019s midpoint, as well as a turning point into act three; this is typically where the protagonist fails.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, the last act follows with a pre-climax to build tension, before the actual climax, then denouement.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Hunger Games<\/em> by Suzanne Collins has a compelling three-act structure: Katniss volunteers as tribute for the Hunger Games; the Games start; and Katniss wins and goes home (albeit to more potential danger).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great way to weave complexity is to include three characters, who move through your acts together but with differing points of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which leads us to\u2026&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three Point-Of-View Characters&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating three characters who all experience the plot of your <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/what-makes-a-good-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story<\/a> in different ways, with differing opinions or agendas, can make for an exciting read. This is especially effective if each character gets a <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/points-of-view-in-fiction-writing-with-plenty-of-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">point of view <\/a>(POV); adding a third character adds some nuance to a dual narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was done incredibly well in Tomi Adeyemi\u2019s <em>Children of Blood and Bone<\/em>, which follows the POVs of protagonist Zelie, and siblings Amari and Inan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of the book\u2019s fresh concept and stellar execution, what makes this interesting is that one of the POV characters is ***SPOILER ALERT*** gravely injured in the finale.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want even more complexity?
