Those first few days of January make everything seems possible. Finishing your book. Getting a literary agent. Then something will happen that will make that seem less doable. Usually something life-related, but it can also be hitting a wall with edits<\/a>, or perhaps a rejection email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting a literary agent is definitely possible. And this really could be the year. How? Well, let\u2019s say you\u2019ve just finished the first draft of your novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how you might have a literary agent before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January \u2013 Read Your Novel Through.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

February \u2013 Re-plan Your Structure.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However much you planned your novel before you started, chances are that it doesn\u2019t look exactly the same now it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s okay \u2013 it doesn\u2019t need to. What your plot does need to do, is make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Make notes on what your plot does at the moment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Read this guide to classic plot structures<\/a> \u2013 does yours match them?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Identify the parts of your novel structure<\/a> that aren\u2019t working as they should.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Re-plan your structure. Post-it notes can be really helpful for this part. And use the snowflake method<\/a>, or you\u2019ll probably go as crazy as a barn owl.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    March \u2013 Implement Your Structural Changes Until Your Plot Is Spot On.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Don\u2019t be afraid to delete scenes, or even entire chapters at this point. You can always move them onto another document for use again later, if needs be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. Take each new plot point in turn and think about what needs to change with your original draft to make it fit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Make the changes to a new draft document.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Again, don\u2019t get bogged down in the details. At this point, you\u2019re really just looking at the bare bones of your plot structure. As you swap things around, you might realise that has ramifications further on in the book \u2013 that\u2019s okay. Make a note of them to come back to later.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n

      April \u2013 Read Your Novel Again, Focusing On Your Character Development.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      All novels centre around characters that change<\/a>, and the successful ones emerge from intensive character development<\/a> work that takes place (ideally) before you start writing your novel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      1. What does your character want in the beginning?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. How does this change as they go through the novel? Is that believable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. What does your character learn at the end? What is the character arc?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. And what about your secondary characters?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        If your character journeys don\u2019t quite match up just yet, then go back to the drawing board and ensure your plot makes that happen. Remember \u2013 most stories are driven by their characters, not the other way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Do also remember to check that your key scenes are shown<\/em>, not told <\/em>\u2013 that is, you need to make sure you have dramatised them on the page in (the fictional version) of real time. Third party reports of what happened aren\u2019t nearly so enticing, to put it mildly. More on showing and telling here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        May \u2013 Give Your Novel To Another Writer, Or An Editor You Trust.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Once you have your structure sorted, it can be really useful to have another pair of eyes on your work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        1. Make sure they know to read only for the plot and not the language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Ask them if they found the characters believable (yes \u2013 even elves need realistic character arcs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. You don\u2019t need to agree with every comment they make, but it\u2019s worth asking why they made it. If they didn\u2019t like your protagonist, perhaps you need to make it clearer why they should?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Once you get your feedback \u2013 such as stunningly good quality feedback<\/a> from our Jericho editors<\/a> \u2013 make the changes you feel will make your novel better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          June \u2013 Look At The Language.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Okay, so now <\/em>it\u2019s okay to start doing a copy edit<\/a>. Still, park your typo hunt for the time being and instead focus on some of the larger language issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          1. How are you telling the story? First person? Past tense? Is this the best way for this story to be told?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. Is your voice consistent? Write a set of voice rules, such as syntax and grammar. Are these followed throughout?<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Are your sentences as tight as they could be? Every word you use should have its place in your sentence. If you have any lines that aren\u2019t pulling their weight \u2013 get rid of them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            July \u2013 Give Your Novel To An Editor, Or Beta Readers.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            An editor<\/a> will do wonders for your book<\/a>. They will spot things you\u2019ve missed in structure, character, dramatisation and things you probably haven\u2019t given much thought to before. This is their job, and they\u2019re good at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Alternatively, sending your book to family, friends or writing groups can be a good way of getting this feedback. As before, remember that you don\u2019t need to change everything for everyone, but it\u2019s worth thinking about why a reader said what they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            August – Proofread.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Your editor or beta readers may well have pointed out a few errors already, but there are always more, hidden away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            1. Try printing your manuscript off. This will help your eye spot the mistakes on the page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            2. Look for inconsistencies. Check your language rules again. Do a \u2018Find\u2019 and \u2018Replace\u2019 for any mishaps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              This stage doesn\u2019t matter as much as you might think. Of course, it\u2019s important that your writing is of a high standard before it\u2019s sent to agents. But it\u2019s much more important to get the story, characters and language right, than it is spotting every typo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              September \u2013 Start Putting Your Work Out There.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

              Yes \u2013 this is the scary bit. But there are ways you can ease yourself in, first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                \n
              1. Come to the Festival of Writing<\/a>. This will tell you everything you need to know about taking this next step and even give you a little help along the way, perhaps via one of our Friday Night Live sessions, or a literary agent 1-2-1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              2. Enter writing competitions. The Bath Novel Award<\/a>, or the Mslexia Novel Award<\/a>, perhaps? Even being long-listed for these awards can be a huge boost \u2013 not only to your writing CV, but also to your confidence.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                October \u2013 Learn How To Submit To A Literary Agent.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                If you came to the Festival of Writing, you might already know this stuff. Otherwise, ensure you read everything you can on the rules of submission. There are <\/em>rules and you do <\/em>need to follow them to ensure you\u2019re taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  \n
                1. Learn how to write a synopsis<\/a>, and have a go at making a few of different lengths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                2. Polish up the first five thousand words<\/a> of your manuscript.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                3. Learn how to write a professional query letter.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                  And of course, you\u2019ll be following (rigorously!) our guide on getting literary agents<\/a> \u2026 and using our massive agent FAQs<\/a> for any questions you may still have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  You\u2019ll also be needing our (comprehensive and up to date) lists of US agents<\/a> and UK agents<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  November \u2013 Submit To Literary Agents.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
                    \n
                  1. Make a longlist of literary agents who will take your work (try searching for genre via this<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  2. Make a shortlist of agents who you like the best \u2013 perhaps because you\u2019ve met them at an event, or because they represent books that are similar to yours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  3. Send to the first five of these agents, making sure you follow all the rules to submission<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                    December \u2013 Land Your Literary Agent.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

                    Sometimes, it can take a while to find the right agent for your book. When you do find the right agent though, they will often know from the very first page that they want to represent you. When this happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      \n
                    1. Email the other agents you are waiting to hear back from, letting them know you\u2019ve had an offer of representation. You want to be in a position to choose your favourite, if you can.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    2. Meet with the agent(s) and ask them questions about what they can do for you and your book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    3. Sign a deal with the literary agent of your dreams.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

                      You\u2019ve probably noticed that the majority of your year will be spent working on your novel. That\u2019s because writing a brilliant book is the best thing you can do to ensure you land a literary agent. The rest, is really just knowing the rules of submission and getting it out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
