How you create dialogue will determine how original it is at conveying meaning, developing the story, and drawing the audience into the emotions of your characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always be aware of how you can <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/a-question-of-timing-when-to-release-information-in-your-plot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incorporate subtext<\/a> into your dialogue. Subtext is the underlying meaning of a character\u2019s words and actions. It\u2019s when someone says one thing but means something else \u2013 usually the emotional significance behind the surface words. That\u2019s why it connects to the audience at the deepest level. As you write see how much your dialogue can suggest the inner emotions of characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Oh, and if you\u2019re after help with the same issues in the context of the novel, then you probably want to pop over to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/writing-dialogue\/\">this blog post<\/a>&nbsp;instead. Or, better still, as well.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give Dialogue Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to your dialogue out loud as you write. If you leave them on the page you won\u2019t know whether they\u2019re going to come alive or not.&nbsp; Use a tape recorder or the voice facility on your computer. Ask yourself how the dialogue\u2019s going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does it have energy, pace and rhythm?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it original? Believable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unique to each character?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional connection with the audience?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I used subtext well?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating tension?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing space?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating conflict?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How sharp is it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each word necessary?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suggesting psychological state?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does it have energy, pace and rhythm?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it original? Believable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unique to each character?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional connection with the audience?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have I used subtext well?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating tension?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing space?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating conflict?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How sharp is it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each word necessary?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suggesting psychological state?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking Over The First Draft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, move around and say the words out loud or get friends to read through it and you listen and make notes. This time you\u2019re assessing the dialogue\u2019s role in the trajectory of the story. Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is this developing my characters\u2019 inner life?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What distinctive details are shaping my characters\u2019 ways of speaking? Are they all sufficiently individualised by not only what they say but how they say it?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it forwarding the action?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What do I lose\/gain if I get rid of this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there moments where I\u2019m giving the audience some space to absorb what\u2019s happening?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why is my character compelled to say this? And why at this moment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What does the audience need to know here? Better to keep them waiting?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Would silence be more dramatic here?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How are the words speaking to the theme of the story?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much is subtext expressing meaning?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Screenwriting Exercises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Get into the habit of <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/30-screenplays-for-every-screenwriter-to-read\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">watching a few scenes of films<\/a> and focus solely on how the dialogue and subtext are working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose a few movies you haven\u2019t seen. Try watching dialogue scenes with the sound turned off. Then write the dialogue. Turn the sound up. Compare your words to those in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try writing <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/screenwriting-writing-your-characters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">short exchanges for your char<\/a>acters using subtext alone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get two lovers talking. A scene of tenderness. A violent row. Making up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get a supporting character and main character together. Make it a power struggle.
