{"id":3037,"date":"2020-12-15T10:53:48","date_gmt":"2020-12-15T10:53:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/?p=3037"},"modified":"2024-10-31T15:34:13","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T15:34:13","slug":"how-to-price-an-ebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-price-an-ebook\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Price An Ebook"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-publishing-industry-is-in-a-state-of-change\">The Publishing Industry Is In A State Of Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>New authors face, for the first time, a real question about whether it makes sense to approach the market by the <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/traditional-publishing-vs-self-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traditional agent and publisher route<\/a>, or whether to go it alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, I think most authors still need the resources and experience of proper publishers. There are some striking exceptions, of course, but it\u2019s still notable how many <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/do-literary-agents-want-self-published-authors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-published authors<\/a> end up working with the biggest firms (E.L. James and Random House, for example.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s still vital to understand this new market. And one of the most critical interrelationships is that between the <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-self-publish-a-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">price of an ebook<\/a> and the eventual sales. I\u2019ve just come across this chart, which is the best thing I\u2019ve ever seen on that topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the chart says very simply is: price too high and you throttle sales. Price too low and you give away money without any <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-control-your-self-publishing-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">addition to sales<\/a>. (My guess is that readers assume, correctly, that a $0.99 ebook is often not going to be much good.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a weird twist here, however. Traditional publishers are deeply reluctant to <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-much-does-it-cost-to-publish-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sell books<\/a> at the $2.99 level. Although they might boost sales on an individual title by pricing low, they can\u2019t boost sales overall by slashing prices because, in the end, a reader is only going to buy and read so many books a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there\u2019s a curious way in which traditional authors are inhibited by their publishers. The most obvious and proven method of increasing sales (and readers) is to cut the ebook price&#8230; yet that\u2019s the method least favoured by publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/creative-writing-courses\/simply-self-publish-course\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"180\" src=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SSP.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-573478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SSP.png 600w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SSP-300x90.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I still think that regular publishing is the<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/should-self-published-authors-turn-to-traditional-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> best move for most authors<\/a>. That\u2019s not mere talk. I\u2019ve got a non-fiction project that I\u2019m tinkering with and am trying to figure out whether to sell it via my agent or whether to publish it myself online. I\u2019ve not finally decided, but I\u2019m inclining to go the conventional route. Like I say though, these things are moving all the time. The right answer today may well not be the right answer in a year\u2019s time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Bard remarks,&nbsp;<em>Don\u2019t speak too soon, cos the wheel\u2019s still in spin, and there\u2019s no telling who that it\u2019s naming<\/em>.
