I know what you\u2019re thinking. Why do I need to read a blog post about Second Novel Syndrome, when I haven\u2019t even finished the first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, publishing is a funny thing. In January 2017, I wondered if I\u2019d ever <\/em>get a novel published.<\/a> By March that same year, I had an agent and my book was in the London Book Fair catalogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it happens, it can happen fast. [Ed\u2019s Note: It kinda helps if you come to one of Jericho Writers\u2019 events<\/a>. That\u2019s where the magic happened for our Sarah.<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is Second Novel Syndrome?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Second novel syndrome (SNS) isn\u2019t talked about a lot. I spent twelve years writing books and trying to get an agent, and I didn\u2019t think much about what would happen after that. Getting an agent felt like an impossible end goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second books are actually notoriously difficult to write. I know \u2013 I didn\u2019t think they would be, either. I wrote three \u2018practice\u2019 books before I made it with my debut. What\u2019s the big deal about writing one more?
<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

SNS Symptom #1 \u2013 You Have Way Less Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I started my debut novel in July 2014. In 2015, I completely trashed the draft and started again.<\/a> In 2016, I wrote my next draft as part of a writing course, and then completely changed it again <\/em>in the summer of that year, thanks to some feedback from an agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, the novel took me two and a half years to write \u2013 and then another year editing it with my agent and editors after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I casually asked my agent when publishers expect an author\u2019s second book, she said \u2018usually a year after delivery of the first\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep \u2013 a year.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in that year, I had to come up with an astounding concept that was as good as the first. I had to research, plan and write a terrible first draft (that I could bin and re-write entirely, before no doubt re-writing again<\/em>). All of this whilst trying to hold down a full-time job and all those other things that go with being a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The cure: make more time<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Certainly not an easy feat. For me, I\u2019ve had to cut my working week to four days, so I have at least one day to donate entirely to writing. I work from home as much as I can, so I have more energy to write in the evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This won\u2019t be doable for everyone. Find the pockets of time you can<\/em> squeeze out of your day, no matter how big or small, knuckle down and make that happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SNS Symptom #2 \u2013 You Now Have Multiple Projects On Your Hands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a bit of a loyal writer. When I have my head in a book, it consumes me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last year, I\u2019ve learnt that it\u2019s not really possible to write a second book and have it consume you. I\u2019ve had to split my time between writing my new book and editing my old one \u2013 occasionally dropping the new project completely to make a deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some writers are already brilliant at project juggling. For me \u2013 it\u2019s been a big learning curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The cure: learn how to juggle projects<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

As your writing career progresses, you\u2019re going to have more and more projects to juggle<\/a>. When you\u2019re writing your fifth book, you might still be doing events on your debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one talks about it, but it is<\/em> one of those skills you have to learn if you want to be a professional writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m still in the process of learning it, but so far, I\u2019ve found that sectioning my working week can help differentiate between projects. In the morning, I could be working on debut edits from home. Then in the afternoon, I take my laptop to a caf\u00e9 and I throw some words down for book two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SNS Symptom #3 \u2013 You Can\u2019t Shake Off Your Last Book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My debut was written in first person present, from the point of view of a girl with a distinctive voice and a weird way of seeing the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve spent three and a half years with her, and I\u2019m still with her now. She\u2019s difficult to shake off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve written over a hundred first pages of my new novel, and they\u2019re still not quite right. I need a new, equally distinctive, but completely different voice \u2013 but everything I write still seems to be about her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The cure: get out of your comfort zone<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

If, like me, you\u2019re struggling to find a new voice, try writing your story in a completely different way to your first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, I\u2019ve found writing in verse to be a helpful way in. Writing poetry means I can get to know my new character in a place my previous protagonist doesn\u2019t belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes \u2013 I\u2019ll probably scrap every word. But with first drafts, everything and anything you can write will help you reach the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SNS Symptom #4 \u2013 Your Next Book Needs To Be As Good As Your First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a writer, I feel the need to impress. My agent is amazing \u2013 she fights in my corner and believes wholeheartedly in my writing. I want to hand her a new novel that is even more amazing<\/em> than she thought my first one was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, what I\u2019m actually writing is terrible. I mean \u2013 of course it is. She saw my debut after two rewrites and a year of edits. All she\u2019s going to see now is that first draft I\u2019m going to throw away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing this doesn\u2019t make it any easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, when we\u2019re writing something we don\u2019t think is as good as it could be, it can be difficult to keep going. It becomes easier to stop for a bit, maybe have a tidy up, or obsessively scour Pinterest for home d\u00e9cor ideas…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Not that I do that.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The cure: forget about other people<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This one I definitely find the hardest, as I have a (somewhat ridiculous) need to please people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth is though \u2013 other people don\u2019t matter<\/a> when it comes to first drafts. Anyone who writes, or who knows writing, will know that first drafts are for the writer to work out what it is they want to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First drafts of book two do not need to be as good as your finished debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And \u2013 all because you have an agent now, doesn\u2019t mean you are suddenly a know-it-all, master writer. All writers need to keep learning and \u2013 importantly \u2013 keep making mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The important thing is that we keep writing. That\u2019s the only way horrible first drafts get turned into published novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Novel Syndrome: A Cure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no complete cure for Second Novel Syndrome other than just doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But do remember this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
