That\u2019s great. Congratulations! It\u2019s a big moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now you need to make sure that your novel draft works on&nbsp;<em>other<\/em>&nbsp;readers as you want it to. Maybe you\u2019ve just about managed to&nbsp;tame your novel, but now you\u2019re facing A Big Revision or <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/the-rewriters-journey-by-john-david-mann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rewriting<\/a> of your first draft \u2013 so where on earth do you start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/types-of-editing-how-to-choose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">edit<\/a>, revise or rewrite anything, here are some pointers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Step-1-Read-Through-Your-Book\">Step 1: Read Through Your Book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, I suggest, you need to do your own appraisal, trying to read your<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/how-to-edit-your-first-draft-novel-a-checklist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> first draft novel<\/a> straight through, and as much like a reader as you can. I call this \u201cproblem-finding\u201d, and by&nbsp;<em>far<\/em>&nbsp;the best way to do this it on paper, with a pen in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using track-changes and comment balloons on screen is a poor second, but possible; either way, you\u2019re trying to record your reactions, as a reader, to the story, not start problem-<em>solving<\/em>: that comes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also note any wider thoughts that this reading throws up, but don\u2019t then just dive into the most urgent or least frightening job. Because so many decisions and changes will affect all sorts of other things, it\u2019s terribly easy to lose track, get diverted, lapse into&nbsp;fiddling and tinkering, and generally get into a worse muddle than you started in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Step-Two-Organise-Your-Thoughts\">Step Two: Organise Your Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, first bring all the different feedback you\u2019ve had together, make an enormous pot of coffee or your working-drink of choice, and start sorting it out into rough categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Problems that run all through the story: the order you\u2019re telling the story in doesn\u2019t work; a&nbsp;character&nbsp;is cardboard, or vanishes, a lost-letter plot\u2019s in a muddle; the narrative&nbsp;voice&nbsp;is dull.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problems with particular sections: a saggy middle; that scene where&nbsp;the dialogue&nbsp;is flat as a pancake; the too-confusing opening; the crucial but&nbsp;oh-so-difficult sex, or battle, scene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Problems of continuity and consistency, such as paragraphing, how dialogue is punctuated, or how you represent dialect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What I call \u201cbits\u201d: individual corrections and tweaks, from typos, to one-off clunky paragraphs, to missing research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have the overall picture, you can sort it out into a to-do list, and decide on the order to tackle your rewrite. The temptation here is to plunge straight into the revision process . . . but you need to resist that. You<em> need <\/em>to make sure the structure is solid and the roof waterproof, then get the electrician in to move lights and install heating, and only when all that\u2019s done, do you paint the walls and lay carpets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whichever order you do things in, any major change probably has ramifications elsewhere. Get into the habit of not galloping off to follow up now, but make a note on your To Do list to tackle it at a logical point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And although every writer is different, this, I suggest, would be a good order in which to tackle things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"Step-5-Re-Read-The-Entire-Text\">\n<li>Big structural changes. Don\u2019t worry about the close-detail of stitching the sections into their new places, just do the rough carpentry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any all-through-the-story things which need shrinking, changing or enhancing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individual work on scenes and sections, now that they\u2019re all in the (probably) right place.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistency and continuity things which are most easily done when you put on the right glasses and deal with that issue all together: a character\u2019s taste in clothes, say, or the punctuation and paragraphing of dialogue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just work through from the beginning of your manuscript, and adjust anything that will adversely affect the reader&#8217;s experience. You could even recruit some<a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/beta-readers-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> beta readers<\/a> to help you out with this stage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Step-Four-Work-In-Layers\">Step Four: Work In Layers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As much as you possibly can, tackle any particular problem working forwards in the story, so that you stay in touch with how the reader reads. It\u2019s super-important for plots which depend on many other elements of the book (sub-plots, foreshadowing, pacing etc). But it also matters for things like characterisation and setting, because the reader is encountering this person or place in stages, through time: make sure you\u2019re in control of how that knowledge develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it helps you, work through the novel focusing on just one layer: focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/developmental-editing-what-it-is-where-to-get-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">editing<\/a> Aunt Anita\u2019s character arc, let\u2019s say, or the way you build a picture of 1940s Manhattan. Ignore anything else (good or bad) if it doesn\u2019t pertain to those exact issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know it feels inefficient to \u201cgo through the book\u201d so many times, but believe me, you save far more trouble than you spend, because you don\u2019t get in a muddle, duplicate work or cause muddles elsewhere without realising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft.jpg\" alt=\"rewriting-first-draft\" class=\"wp-image-493592\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft.jpg 833w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft-600x432.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft-768x553.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jerichowriters.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/rewriting-first-draft-640x461.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-5-re-read-the-entire-text\">Step 5: Re-Read The Entire Text<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you follow the advice above, you\u2019ll have far less work to do once you get to the last stage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\">\n<li>Do another straight read-through-like-a-reader, in print or on screen. Use this to pick up any darning-in of the big structural changes that\u2019s still needed, and anything else you might have missed. This also is a very good moment to read it aloud, pen in hand, if you haven\u2019t already: it\u2019s brilliant for picking up typos, and more generally getting outside the novel to read it as if you didn\u2019t write it. Just have a big jug of water to hand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Step-6-Stay-Positive\">Step 6: Stay Positive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If all this sounds as if it\u2019s more work than writing the first draft was \u2013 you\u2019d be right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All authors know that writing&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;rewriting. Revising the first draft of a novel isn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>True, some rewrite each page or even line, until it\u2019s perfect, then move on, while others hurl a whole first draft down on the page, spelling-mistakes and all, and only then go back and start to hammer it into shape. Still, most would say that they spend perhaps three or four times as long on that rewriting of a page or novel as they did on putting the first version of those words on paper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, like most things, rewriting gets easier with time. I hope these steps have given you the support you need to get started.
