You asked. We answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve written your manuscript. You\u2019ve edited hard<\/a>. You are now on your fourth<\/del>, seventh<\/del>, nineteenth draft. You still absolutely believe in your basic concept and you are certain that you have a vocation for writing \/ authoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the thing: you know your work isn\u2019t yet good enough<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you know that just because you\u2019ve got that feelings in my bones. (And believe me: I\u2019ve been there too.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or maybe you\u2019ve tried actually sending your work out to literary agents and had nothing but pre-printed rejection emails. (Or, worse, but very common \u2013 you haven\u2019t even heard back.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what next<\/a>? It feels like a Catch-22. You want expert editing<\/a> to help you over the last remaining hurdles, but the people who look like they ought to be helping you \u2013 those literary agents \u2013 aren\u2019t even replying to your emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now what? And do these darn agents edit manuscripts, yes or no?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, if you want the short answer, then it\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, they do edit manuscripts, but also<\/strong>
No, no, they really don\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If that explanation doesn\u2019t seem totally helpful, then I\u2019ll see if I can make it a little clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Agents Get Involved In Editing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And when (more often) they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to your dealings with literary agents, it\u2019s essential to remember that these guys do not charge you anything upfront<\/em>. Not a dollar, not a dime. I\u2019ve had an agent for twenty years and I have never paid even one single penny for his or (with my first agent) her services \u2013 or not directly anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the way that agents get their money is by earning commissions on sales to publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you take the first book in my Fiona Griffiths series<\/a>, my agent has made sales \u2013 and earned commission \u2013 on sales to publishers in Britain, America, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and further afield. He\u2019s also been involved in the sale of TV rights. He\u2019s also done a terrific audio deal for me. There may be other deals down the road too. Each time one of these deals happens, I get a wodge of money arriving in my bank account, from which the agent has deducted his little (and well-earned) sliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequence of this \u201cno fee \/ commission only\u201d payment structure is that agents only get paid for their time if they make a sale<\/em> \u2013 and then only if that sale is for enough money to pay them back for all that they\u2019ve done. That\u2019s should be easy-ish if the sale is to a Big 5 publisher and brings some overseas book deals in its wake. If the only sale is to a mid-sized or micro domestic publisher, then the agent is probably (privately) disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tottering Slushpile<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If the commission-only way of doing business seems challenging, that challenge is compounded by the sheer volume of submissions that literary agents receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That total varies from agent to agent, but about 2,000 submissions per agent per year would be typical. Of that an agent may find only 2-3 manuscripts that seem destined for the kind of advances that will generate enough revenue for an agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Predictably enough, agents will reject the vast majority of manuscripts that come their way. It\u2019s not just that they don\u2019t have the time to deal with those manuscripts and those clients, it\u2019s that there\u2019s no money in them. Most manuscripts that agents receive are just unsaleable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So When do Agents Edit?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Agents will get involved in editorial advice when they come across a manuscript that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Has an excellent, saleable idea<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Is written with a competent professionalism<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Has a strong story<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Is in the top 1%, or maybe the top 0.5% of all submissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Is not ready to be sent to publishers as it stands.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In effect, when an agent offers to get involved editorially, they are thinking, roughly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cLook, if I sent this manuscript out as it is, I might get offers, but I don\u2019t think they\u2019d be very strong ones… and actually, I might just get fistful of rejections. And I certainly don\u2019t want that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThen again, I can\u2019t helpfeeling that this manuscript could do really well, if I put in the 2-3 dozen hours needed to get this manuscript into shape. Yes, the writer themselves will be doing the actual work here \u2013 my job will be one of guidance only; I\u2019m not going to be making hands-on changes<\/a> to the manuscript myself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBut with my input, and if the writer works hard and makes the changes I recommend? Then yes, I think this could be a really profitable (and fun, and artistically rewarding) project. I\u2019m going to reach out to this author. Yay!<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    As a writer, that\u2019s good to hear on a number of levels. You don\u2019t want a real estate guy who just dumps your house on the market without telling you to mow your overgrown lawn and fix that sagging guttering. You want the real estate person who forces you to fix the house up for sale, in order that you get the very best price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So the fact that agents are willing to be engaged, active and intelligent in how they sell your book is great to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But from your perspective, as writer, there are two crucial qualifications to take away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Crucial Thing the First<\/strong>
    Your manuscript has to be really, really good already.
    You can\u2019t just use agents as a free pass to solving the difficulties that you and your manuscript face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you send an agent a mediocre manuscript, you stand no chance at all of engaging them qua<\/em> editor. In fact, because the competition is so intense, you won\u2019t get an agent involved even if your book is really quite good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The sad fact is that \u201creally quite good\u201d isn\u2019t even close to the standard agents are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Crucial Thing the Second<\/strong>
    Some agents are really strong editorially, and love doing it.
    Others just aren\u2019t that strong and don\u2019t pretend to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After all, an agent\u2019s core job is as a saleswoman (or, less often in this industry, salesman.) My first agent \u2013 who was great \u2013 told me directly when I engaged her that she just wasn\u2019t that great at editing books, but she was a powerhouse when it came to selling them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These days, I\u2019d say that all agents have had to become more hands on when it comes to polishing manuscripts<\/a> prior to sale, but there\u2019s still a reason why editors edit, and agents sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In effect, using an agent as an editor is a bit like using a carpenter as a bricklayer. Sure, carpenters are skilled and multi-talented. They\u2019ll probably do a pretty good job of building that wall, but . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If You Want An Editor, Hire An Editor!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Well, no. I\u2019m not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You can\u2019t use editorial input as a shortcut. Successful writers always put the hard yards in themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some writers think something like this: \u201cHey, I\u2019ve completed my manuscript. I\u2019ve done a couple of quick read-throughs for typos and that kind of thing. I\u2019ve emailed my manuscript out to a few dozen literary agents, but no one offered to take me on and they won\u2019t help me edit my book, even though I asked really nicely. So, OK, maybe I need to pay someone to get this book into shape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you think like that, then you won\u2019t make the grade as a writer<\/em> and, to be honest with you, you aren\u2019t the sort of client that we especially love dealing with. I mean, sure, we\u2019ll work with anyone, and we\u2019ll do our level professional best for you. But our favourite clients? They are always, always the super-committed ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Remember: Writing is<\/strong> rewriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Self-editing is the art of sifting through your manuscript and checking it for everything<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Surplus words, sentences, paragraphs and scenes. Faulty, vague or unconvincing characterisation. Weak dialogue. Weak plotting. Problems with pace or viewpoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Basically, you need to think like an author and work these things out for yourself, as far as you are possibly able.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You will benefit in three ways. First, your manuscript will get better (probably a lot better). Secondly, your own skills as an author will grow. Thirdly, your pride and confidence will \u2013 quite rightly \u2013 grow and blossom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So, OK, you do all that and then you may still need editorial help<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And that\u2019s fine. Maybe you\u2019ll just know for yourself that your manuscript needs work. Or maybe you\u2019ll try your luck with literary agents and not get the response you wanted. Or maybe you\u2019ve been scratching away at a dissatisfaction with your work, and have found yourself going round in circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
