It\u2019s the theme of this and the next few emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And today: we\u2019re getting dressed up, in a cover design of course, aiming for the sweet, sweet job of jumping from bookshelf to cash till.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before that, though, a reminder. Some books have classic genres, easily identifiable by the title of the bookstore shelf: crime, romance, SF, fantasy, Middle Grade fantasy, or whatever. Most books don\u2019t. They just live under a shelf that says, \u2018Fiction\u2019, which isn\u2019t a genre at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet \u2013 everything has its basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your book is a comically-inclined story about a plump Scots fishmonger who finds love on safari, then your sisters-in-genre are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Relationship-led<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Contemporary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gentle \/ comic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heart-warming<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Especially any such books that have a dash of foreign travel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not a genre exactly, but for most purposes (including today\u2019s) those are the walls that define your space. All books have some such walls and understanding those is crucial to you as a writer and you as a book-publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, we\u2019re going to approach things backwards and will start at the end. Assume your book is done and dusted. If you\u2019re self-publishing, you need to commission a cover. If you\u2019re not, you still need an emphatic sense of what cover does or does not look right for your book. Publishers don\u2019t always get these things right and the most certain way to murder your book\u2019s chances is to end up with a weak cover. For that reason, I generally advise that authors are permitted One Big Strop per book published and, in most cases, that Strop \u2013 if you need to use it at all \u2013 is reserved for a fight about book covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK. So: every book has a genre. And you\u2019re in charge of choosing its cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two lethal mistakes that far too many authors make here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mistake #1<\/strong>: \u201cI want my cover to look original.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mistake #2<\/strong>: \u201cMy cover should reflect my book.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither thing is true, and the first mistake is very dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of a book cover is to <em><u>incite engagement<\/u><\/em>. That\u2019s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a physical bookshop, the cover needs to say, \u201cHey, reader, I\u2019m the sort of book you generally like, so pick me up and turn me over.\u201d On Amazon, the cover says the same kind of thing, except here the engagement involves a click through to blurb instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this delicate moment in the reader-journey, the reader has no information at all, except what book cover (and title) supply. So the job of the cover is just to make sure that your book pitches up in, broadly speaking, the right sets of hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re writing, gritty crime, the cover needs to say, first and foremost, \u2018I\u2019m gritty crime.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If cosy crime, the cover needs to say, \u2018I\u2019m cosy crime.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lots of cosy crime readers may pick up your book and put it down again. That\u2019s life. Don\u2019t worry about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be readers of police procedurals who might, as it happens, enjoy your cosy crime. But you need to ignore them, because if you start to drop in \u2018police procedural\u2019 type signalling into your design, it will confuse the signals to the people who are in fact core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to find the heart of your market \u2013 your genre, in fact \u2013 and plant your book there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the same reason, it hardly matters if a book does or does not reflect your content. One of my more successful covers in the Fiona Griffiths series was a picture of a tree. The book gave no special role to a tree. The tree was relevant to nothing. But the styling said, \u2018Dark, commercial, atmospheric crime\u2019 and that spoke to the book\u2019s core audience. That\u2019s was all that was needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the job of that cover is to signal what group of readers you are looking to attract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s it. Nothing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once your cover has secured the reader\u2019s first tentative engagement, then of course further bits come into play. Your blurb then needs to do two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#1<\/strong>: It needs to reinforce the genre message. If you\u2019re writing cosy crime, the blurb needs to say, in effect, \u2018You picked this book up because the cover told you that I\u2019m all about cosy crime \u2013 and that\u2019s 100% true. If you like old people and cats and quilting and some not-very-scary murders, then this is exactly where you want to be.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>#2<\/strong>: It needs to introduce the specifics of the story \u2013 where\u2019s the book set? Who are the characters? What\u2019s the premise? But those things all have to cohere (looking backwards in the reader journey) with the message of the cover and also (looking forwards) with the experience that the book itself will deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s it. That\u2019s pretty much all you need to know about genre packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I say, even if your genre is floaty (plump-Scots-fishmonger-on-safari type floaty), you still need to find the heart of that genre when you figure out the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genre sells books. That\u2019s why it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>FEEDBACK FRIDAY \/ Title<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s your cover design? What\u2019s your title? Does that communicate genre? When you&#8217;re ready to share, post <a href=\"https:\/\/myjericho.jerichowriters.com\/forums\/forum\/feedback-friday\/11-september-title\/\">in the Townhouse forum.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know very few people will actually have a cover design to hand, and that\u2019s fine. But say something about what kind of thing you\u2019d like to see. And if you\u2019re writing a thriller and your cover design is just \u201cburly male silhouetted against burning urban landscape\u201d that\u2019s completely fine. Is that a totally unoriginal cover design? Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does it instantly and precisely talk directly to your target audience?
