After taking a degree in French literature at Harvard, Andrew Wylie worked in New York as a journalist. At the age of 31, he rented some desk space and set up the Wylie Agency. His clients include Philip Roth, Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, Salman Rushdie and Martin Amis. When asked about the relationship between author and agent by journalist Robert McCrum, Wylie commented, ‘An agent is hired by an author. As the agent, you are the gardener on the author’s estate.
