Cathy attended the College of William & Mary where she studied for a BA in English and Government, with a minor in History. After graduating from university Cathy worked as an Assistant Archivist with the Sewm Library of the College of William & Mary. She later relocated to New York and began working as an Assistant Agent with the Gelfman Schneider Literary Agents.
