Andy founded his literary agency in February 2008, after spending three decades as the owner of Cody’s Books in Berkeley, California. As the store’s primary buyer, he worked closely with new titles. In the 1960s, Cody’s played a visible role in the anti-war movement, with protests often unfolding just outside its doors. On one occasion, police threw a tear gas canister into the shop! In 1989, someone threw a pipe bomb through the window, believed to be connected to The Satanic Verses<\/i>. Although it did not explode, the staff voted unanimously to continue carrying Salman Rushdie’s book, a moment Andy considers his proudest in bookselling.<\/p>\n
Over the years, Cody’s hosted thousands of writers and cultural figures, including Norman Mailer, Gary Snyder, Alan Ginsberg, Kurt Vonnegut, Salman Rushdie, Joseph Heller, Alice Walker, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Muhammad Ali, Gloria Steinem, and Buckminster Fuller. Cody’s closed in 2008 as a result of changing buying habits, but its impact endures.
