Mary attended the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for her undergraduate degree, graduating in 1973 with a BA in Art History. She undertook her first postgraduate course at the University of Michigan in 1974, graduating two years later with an MA in Asian Art History; she then undertook an MA in Arts Administration at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating in 1980. She became Education Director at The Loft Literary Centre in 1994, running the annual Festival of Children’s Literature in addition to her other responsibilities. She regularly hired Betsy Amster to teach workshops at The Loft, and in 2008 she joined Betsy’s agency, Betsy Amster Literary Associates, to capitalise on her extensive contacts and expertise in children’s literature.
