Denver-born Faye Bender graduated from Wellesley College in 1996. She had initially planned to become an archaeologist, but she found that she enjoyed travelling to and living in new places more than the archaeology itself. Deciding she would go into publishing, she interviewed for a range of jobs across the industry before attending a meeting with agent Nick Ellison, who sold her on his particular profession. She gained experience across a variety of agencies, including Nicholas Ellison, Inc., Doris S. Michaels Literary Agency, and Anderson Grinberg Literary Management, Inc., before founding her own company, Faye Bender Literary Agency, where she served as President. In 2015, she and three other publishing veterans (Julie Barer, Brettne Bloom, and Elisabeth Weed) joined forces to create The Book Group, a large agency based in Manhattan.
