Patterson earned his degree in English with highest honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduating in 1996, Patterson did an internship at Algonquin Books, an independent publisher of literary fiction and narrative nonfiction based in Chapel Hill. He then moved to Washington D.C. and began working at the Politics and Prose Bookstore. <\/p>\n

Patterson subsequently worked as an editor for the website Public Affairs and the publishers Henry Holt & Co. He has also been involved with Foundry Literary + Media, the New York agency that represents Ernest Cline and Trevor Noah. <\/p>\n

Now working at the Stuart Krichevsky Literary Agency, Patterson also serves on the board of the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference in Texas.
